In a recent interview, Tetsuya Nomura has revealed that the box art for the Kingdom Hearts HD collections hold many secrets, including a message concerning Kingdom Hearts III.
The box art for the three Kingdom Hearts HD collections, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMix, Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMix, and the upcoming Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, aren’t just beautiful collages of characters and events contained therein, the images hold secrets about the series’ future.
In an interview with Dengeki PlayStation, translated by KH13.com, series director Tetsuya Nomura explained that the designs were meant to work in tandem, show the passage of time and progression of Sora throughout the series.
“Extremely attentive Kingdom Hearts fans might have already discovered [the secrets], but one is that Sora’s movements change from sitting, to standing, to walking.
One more is that when you line up the three illustrations, you’ll notice that they show the flow of time with changes in the sky. [KH1.5] is sunset becoming night, [KH 2.5] is the middle of the night, and [KH 2.8] is night breaking into dawn.”
Sure enough, when all three boxes are lined up the transitions from day to night and back again are unmistakable. Knowing this, the urge to slowly pan across the art looking for minute details is hard to resist. Everything from the colors to the direction characters are facing have new purpose, breathing new life into the artwork and encouraging exploration. The central box becomes the focal point when paired with the others, and contains the series’ main antagonists and represents night. It’s all really quite ingenious.
Of course, a new appreciation for the design wasn’t Nomura’s only intent in this revelation. “Those three illustrations have a message regarding the final chapter, [Kingdom Hearts III],” Nomura hinted. What that message could be isn’t explained and Nomura doesn’t seem to want to tell. He has already stated that he and his team are remaining tight-lipped about details until the release of Final Chapter Prologue, which contains story that will link the previous games with third and final installment of the ‘Dark Seeker’ storyline: Kingdom Hearts III. But, unfortunately, that won’t be until early next year since its initial release in December was delayed.
More details should start trickling in next year as we approach its projected 2017 release, but, aside from some exciting trailers that highlight new combat mechanics and small story details, the only thing that has been confirmed is that there are no plans for an Final Fantasy worlds in the upcoming game.
Any keen-eyed Ranters out there who see something we don’t? Let us know if you think you have cracked the mystery contained in the box art.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue will release exclusively for PlayStation 4 on January 28, 2017 in the west and January 12 in Japan.
