If there's one criticism that can be aimed at the Kingdom Hearts series, it's that it takes forever for a game in the main series to be released. Consider this: the first Kingdom Hearts game was released on March 28, 2002, close to the beginning of the PlayStation 2's run. The second official game, Kingdom Hearts II, was released on March 28, 2006, four years later and close to what many believed to be the end of the PS2's lifetime.

Now, after three spinoff games that went out of their way to establish more of the history in the world of Kingdom Hearts, many are just wondering when information on a third official title will be revealed. Well, you're in luck, as apparently, there will be hints about Kingdom Hearts 3 in the game for the 3DS, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

In what will continue an ongoing tradition in the series, Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance contains a secret movie that will give some information regarding what will happen in Kingdom Hearts 3. Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura revealed this in Famitsu magazine, but naturally went no further than that. He did, however, explain that Kingdom Hearts 3 would be the last game in the current storyline, and would finish the story involving Xehanort. They will continue after that, with Sora still as the protagonist, but start a new story altogether.

Another question addressed was whether or not HD remakes of games in the series were a possibility. Nomura replied that they were looking into HD tech for some of their older games, but didn't specify if it was for Kingdom Hearts or for other Square Enix titles. Maybe we'll be getting a Kingdom Hearts HD, or maybe that long-rumoured remake of Final Fantasy VII is closer than we think. We'll just have to wait and see.

From the Dream Drop Distance details we know so far, we can safely assume that the third Kingdom Hearts will focus on the final battle with Xehanort. But we still have no information on what worlds will be featured, or how the backstory elements established in the spinoffs will come into play. Hopefully Dream Drop Distance can provide the answers to some of these questions.

What do you think the story of Kingdom Hearts 3 will contain? What new worlds will be seen in it?

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance will release on the Nintendo 3DS.
