Rumor Patrol: Guerrilla Games Working on 'Killzone 4'?

Killzone 4 Guerilla Games

Despite having a number of great first party titles, certain high-profile PS3-only projects still end up performing poorly - even when the titles succeed in offering incredible gameplay experiences (we're look at you Resistance 3). However, one property that is well-known, even outside of the Sony camp, is the interplanetary FPS war series, Killzone.

While Killzone 2 (released back in 2009) was arguably the most well-received title in the series, its predecessor, Killzone 3 (released in 2011), managed to do solid numbers for Sony, selling around 1.8 million units by September of this year. As a result, it's not a surprise to hear that Guerrilla Games may be working on an entirely new console Killzone title.

According to a report from Edge magazine, "the bulk of Guerrilla's staff (is soldiering) on with the next Killzone installment." While the magazine only specifies that the title is a "follow-up" to the fan-favorite franchise, considering the studio's history of series spin-off titles, such as the PSP game, Killzone: Liberation, it's not entirely clear whether the game will be a direct sequel or explore some other aspect of the Helghast/I.S.A. conflict.

While the end of Killzone 3 (read our review) certainly left the door open for another story installment, despite the studio's attempts to diversify the gameplay with tropical and arctic locales, there's no doubt that many fans of the series found Killzone 3 to be a little too "samey" - and a bit of a letdown. Significantly mixing-up the format and ditching the team of mostly unlikable rock-heads (specifically Rico), the series has focused on could really crack the formula back open and offer an even better Killzone sequel experience.

It's also unclear when exactly we'll be seeing the game. Most Sony first party titles have enjoyed a two-year turnaround lately - meaning Killzone 4 would land in the early part of 2013.  However, with several Sony studios potentially working on PS4 titles as well as reports that the game company wants to get their console successor out before the Xbox 720, it's unclear if Guerilla's game, will be available on the PS3 or serve as a next generation launch title.
