While the game’s launch is about 30 days away, players will not have to wait that long to get some hands-on time with Killzone 3. Sony just announced that Killzone 3 will get an open multiplayer beta starting on February 2, 2011. As one of Game Rant’s Most Anticipated Games of 2011, it is easy to see why this is some exciting news. There is nothing wrong with playing Killzone 3 earlier than expected.
The open beta will be available on the PlayStation Network and will be free to all North American PS3 users. The beta will run from February 2 to February 14. Think of it as an early Valentine’s Day present from Sony and Guerrilla Games. The beta will also allow gamers to try out the PlayStation Move controls and play the game in stereoscopic 3D.
The Killzone 3 beta will be limited to one multiplayer map, Frozen Dam, but will feature all three online multiplayer modes, as well as the offline multiplayer mode Botzone. The three online multiplayer modes are Guerrilla Warfare, Warzone, and Operations.
Guerrilla Warfare is akin to a classic team deathmatch mode. Up to 16 players can play online. Warzone will be well known to fans of Killzone 2. It allows for up to 24 players. It is a round-based multiplayer campaign that consists of five randomly ordered mini-missions. Lastly, Operations allows 16 players and it aims to deliver a more cinematic, story-based gameplay experience, similar to that of Killzone 3′s single-player mode. In Operations, the ISA must try to secure the docks and destroy the dam, while the Helghast must try to protect the dam facility.
As our impressions from the prior closed beta demonstrated, Killzone 3‘s multiplayer makes for a good time. It is a little hard to see how this is a beta, though, and not a demo. The beta closes so close to the game’s release that one has to wonder if Guerrilla Games could implement any meaningful changes prior to release. Perhaps if something is glaringly wrong, or the network is over-strained, they can get a fix out the door quickly for launch or soon thereafter.
