This year’s E3 has given birth to many exciting announcements, but arguably none were more anticipated than Nintendo’s follow-up to the Wii. Now that we know more about the Wii U and have seen the new controller in action, it’s time for developers to show us what they have planned for the console. Ubisoft is leading the pack much like they did with Nintendo’s 3DS, and have announced Killer Freaks From Outer Space as a launch title for Wii U.

Killer Freaks From Outer Space is a first person shooter that is equal parts horror and comedy. It takes place in a world where hordes of Killer Freaks have invaded the planet and, as one of the few survivors, the player sets out to settle the score. If it isn’t completely obvious from the title, Killer Freaks is very much shooting for a B-movie vibe and doesn’t take itself too seriously. In fact, it is so reminiscent of a certain film, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lawsuit from the creators of the cult classic Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

Nothing has been revealed as to how the game utilizes the Wii U’s revolutionary controller, but evidently Ubisoft has something in mind. According to Xavier Poix, managing director of Ubisoft France’s studios, the controller really adds to the experience.

“When we realized the potential of what Nintendo was offering by creating a tactile controller, we were off and running immediately. Having that extra screen in the hand of the player allows us boundless innovation that ultimately gives the player a more beautiful game, a faster game interface, a personalized game experience, and so much more.”

Killer Freaks From Outer Space is marketed directly to hardcore gamers as a way of showing off the Wii U’s capabilities. It will be interesting to see how successful it is after the Wii’s lackluster relationship with FPSs  (besides GoldenEye).

This type of game was designed for me. I love cult classics and B-movies, as well as first person shooters. The tone of the trailer was spot on and left me hungry for more. If Ubisoft can deliver a solid FPS for traditional gamers, it will be a big boost to the Wii U’s launch line-up.

The big question will be whether Killer Freaks From Outer Space is more like the N64’s GoldenEye or the Wii’s Red Steel. What do you think? Do the Killer Freaks have your attention?

Killer Freaks From Outer Space will be available exclusively for Wii U at launch in 2012.
