Back 4 Blood officially released today around the world, and fans are starting to express their thoughts on the game. KFC Gaming, the strange video game-related account for Kentucky Fried Chicken, didn't have the kindest of words to say about Back 4 Blood, but that didn't stop Turtle Rock Studios from firing back.

Some restaurant chains have clued in on the power of advertising to gamers through social media with places like Arby's posting gaming art fixtures with its wrappers, and Kentucky Fried Chicken, which went so far as to create a whole video game-related account titled KFC Gaming. Earlier last year, KFC Gaming revealed a new game console, known as the KFConsole, that doubled as a chicken warmer. While it only ended up being a marketing stunt, it still garnered a lot of attention. With today's release of Back 4 Blood, this was a perfect opportunity for KFC Gaming to cause some havoc.

KFC Gaming threw out a pretty heavy-handed tweet today criticizing Back 4 Blood. In the simple post, KFC Gaming writes, "Every masterpiece has its cheap copy," followed by an image of Left 4 Dead and Back 4 Blood, with the latter game being the "cheap copy." Besides the name, Back 4 Blood is actually developed by some of the team that worked on Left 4 Dead, and is in many ways, a spiritual successor to that game. Back 4 Blood does many things different from Left 4 Dead, like character skills and weapon variety, but it is nonetheless easy to compare the two and see the similarities between them as well.

While KFC Gaming never addressed Turtle Rock Studios directly, it did not back down from KFC Gaming's comments. On the official Turtle Rock Studios Twitter account, the studio posted an image of KFC Gaming's tweet with the caption, "11 herbs and spices, and still no taste." One of KFC's other greatest marketing ploys is its "secret recipe" that is reportedly made up of 11 herbs and spices, which is what Turtle Rock Studios is making fun of here. It has spoken in the past about balancing fans expectations with Back 4 Blood coming off of Left 4 Dead, so dealing with KFC Gaming may not have been too difficult.

As mentioned, much of what KFC Gaming does is to generate attention, so Turtle Rock Studios would have really been fine not acknowledging the post. However, to clap back at KFC Gaming the way it did, Turtle Rock Studios somewhat spun the narrative around and assumed control of the situation—that is, until KFC Gaming launches another one. As was shown with Sora coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the way the character was repeatedly trending, social media is a pervasive and impactful space, allowing for some pretty interesting and entertaining interactions between the least likely of sources.

Back 4 Blood is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
