2015’s Kerbal Space Program cemented a place for itself in the ranks of great sci-fi games through its distinct mix of space sim sandbox gameplay, quirky physics, and goofy sense of humor. Unfortunately, it will be quite a while before its followup, Kerbal Space Program 2, can leave its own mark, because the game has been delayed again.

After having its release window pushed back to fall 2021 earlier this year, Take-Two Interactive announced during its second fiscal quarter report this week that the game is now slated to launch during the 2023 fiscal year. That puts its release somewhere between April 2022 and March 2023.

Along with Take-Two’s announcement, creative director Nate Simpson took to the official KSP forums to address the community. Saying the game will now launch in 2022, he offered his condolences to fans frustrated over Kerbal Space Program 2’s latest setback but stressed that the development team needs the time to create a “reliable foundation” that players and modders can build upon for years to come. “It’s not enough to deliver a bunch of new features – those features have to be woven together into a stable, polished whole,” he wrote.

Until it’s able to make that foundation available for all, the development team will continue to post new images from Kerbal Space Program 2, and Simpson added that it will release more in-depth feature videos and developer diaries as well, with the first set to debut this winter. As he wrote, “hopefully those will help 2021 to go by a little faster.”

Kerbal Space Program 2 is slated to launch in 2022 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
