Kenshi gives players an open world and the freedom to do with it what they please. The game's lack of structure allows players to make their own story out of this game. Most likely, one of the first steps that players will want to do though is find some building they can call their own. Fortunately, despite this being set in a post-apocalyptic world, there are still towns with options available for purchase.

These towns are home to some devastated buildings that can actually be purchased and used. Buying these buildings and repairing them can make a major difference in a player's early journey in Kenshi. For those looking to buy and repair buildings in this game, this guide is here to help.

How to Repair Buildings in Kenshi

Players need to purchase a building before they can repair it. Earning Cats, Kenshi's in-game currency, can be a bit of a challenge, but selling ore and scavenged items can easily earn players enough money to offset the purchase of a small building. While in a town, players can left-click a building to bring up if it is up for sale and how much it costs.

Once a building has been purchased, players can right-click the building and select "repair" to initiate its reconstruction. The debris will disappear, and a grid will form over the structure while the player's character begins their work. As with building a structure outside a town, players need a certain amount of building materials to complete the repairs. These can be purchased from merchants for around 113 Cats each. The larger the building, the more building materials will be required.

What to Use Buildings For in Kenshi

The most important function of a building in Kenshi's steampunk-like world is protection from the elements and the people in the world. Often players will find themselves under attack by roaming enemies in this hostile world, so having a place within a guarded town to retreat to can mean the difference between life and death.

On top of it being a safe haven, players can have buildings focus on particular elements of the game. For example, within one building, a player can create a small research bench, and that building can be the focus for improving a player's technological advancement. With another, players can place different storage vessels and turn the space into their large inventory location.

Buildings can be listed as either open to the public or private. The private option keeps NPCs away and even adds a locking function to the door. A public building will welcome people in, and players can take advantage of this by adding in a shop counter. This will allow NPCs to purchase the goods in the counter inventory, offering the chance to earn extra money. As Kenshi is one of the longest RPGs out there, players will likely need a mix of building types as they progress.

Kenshi is available on PC.
