John Wick has been revolutionary in the action genre. It's no surprise that the Ana de Armas-starring spinoff Ballerina is now in the works. What does come as a surprise is that Ian McShane and Keanu Reeves are now reportedly slated to make a return to the universe in the spinoff.

John Wick mystified audiences back in 2014 when it was first released. The high octane action-thriller starred Keanu Reeves in the title role as an assassin of mythical proportions. Two sequels followed in 2017 and 2019, respectively. They've been a huge success, and for that reason, various spinoffs have been planned, such as the John Wick prequel series The Continental over at Peacock.

Two different sources reported on Reeves and McShane's return to the franchise. Collider exclusively revealed that Reeves would be returning for Ballerina, while McShane was exclusively reported to be returning at The Hollywood Reporter. Collider speculated that Ballerina may be a prequel, but also allowed that it very well may occur closer in the timeline to John Wick 4.

While Reeves has played the title role of John Wick, McShane played the role of Winston, the manager at the Continental, a hotel where a cabal of international assassins operate. Ana de Armas has previously stated that she wanted Ballerina to have a female writer. The film is reportedly centered around a young woman with killer abilities seeking vengeance after a team of hitmen kill her family. Anjelica Huston is also tied to the project, reprising her role from 2019's John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum.

While Ballerina does not have an official release date, John Wick 4 will reportedly be the longest film in the series and will be releasing in theaters on March 24, 2023. Ballerina will probably follow in its predecessor's footsteps and be just as intense as other films in the franchise. Ana de Armas' character has not yet been named, but the concept of a ballerina-turned-assassin has been present in the franchise before - John Wick faces off against a killer ballerina in the third installment (that character was played by Unity Phelan, however).

While Chad Staheleski is in no rush to make it, the John Wick director has talked about the possibility for a fifth movie. The series has been extremely profitable since its inception, so there's little stopping the team behind the films from making more movies. Unless, of course, John Wick 4 severely underperforms, which is unlikely.

John Wick 4 hits theaters on March 24, 2023.
