Netflix's new action-packed Kate trailer has been released. Last month Netflix released a short teaser for the new film, which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a ruthless criminal operative who has less than 24 hours to live.

The Kate trailer opens with Winstead's titular character realizing she's been poisoned after failing to assassinate a Yakuza boss. The prognosis is not good, as a doctor informs her that she only has about 15 hours to live as the poison courses through her veins, slowly deteriorating her body. From there Kate embarks on a bloody quest for revenge, brutally fighting her way through the Tokyo underworld, trying to enact her revenge before the clock runs out. Her search for answers brings her into the orbit of a young girl, the daughter of one of her previous victims, who agrees to help Kate get revenge on the man who poisoned her.

The new film is the latest in an ongoing trend of female-led action films. Netflix recently released the John Wick-inspired Gunpowder Milkshakewhich featured Guardians of the Galaxy's Karen Gillan similarly developing a friendship with the daughter of one of her victims. Amazon Prime also recently debuted the action film Jolt, which stars Kate Beckinsale as a nightclub bouncer with some serious anger management issues and features a similar neon and nightlife aesthetic. While the Kate trailer shows that the film does bear some resemblance to these predecessors, where it really draws inspiration from is the Jason Statham action franchise Crank.

In the first Crank film, released in 2006, Statham plays a hitman who is injected with a serum that requires him to always keep his adrenaline levels high in order to survive. The high-octane action film was notable for its over-the-top violence and fast-paced, minimal plot. Both Crank and Kate have a killer protagonist seeking revenge before their biological clock runs out.

Winstead has also been making a name for herself as one of the most badass women in Hollywood in recent years. The actress was also recently featured in Cathy Yan's Harley Quinn spin-off film Birds of Prey, where she played the character Huntress, another ruthless assassin looking for revenge.

Hopefully, Winstead's Kate is able to find what she's looking for, but either way, if you happen to be running around with the Yakuza and you see her on the streets of Tokyo, you'd better turn the other way. As the Kate trailer shows, the film also stars Woody Harrelson, Michiel Huisman, and Tadanobu Asano.

Kate will premiere in select theatres and on Netflix on September 10th, 2021.
