It appears that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in the final stages of filming. Now, Karen Gillan cast some doubt as to whether her character Nebula will be involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward.

As exciting as it is that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will soon enter the post-production stage, the story of the titular team seems all but finished once the film hits theaters. Director James Gunn has already said Vol. 3 will be the final adventure for the current Guardians of the Galaxy team, and now Gillan has potentially backed up those comments.

In her latest Instagram post, Gillan expressed her lack of knowledge about what the future held for her and Nebula going forward, but in case it was the end, she thanked Gunn for the time he's allowed her to play the character since 2014. "And that’s a wrap on Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3!!!!! I don’t know if Nebula will return beyond this, it’s possible that this is her final chapter. And if that’s the case, then I just want to say thank you to James Gunn for giving me such an interesting, complex and fascinating character to play," Gillan said in her post. "I have enjoyed this exploration more than any other character I’ve played. That was one hell of a decade. Thanks for watching."

Now of course the only people who know what's going on behind the scenes are Gillan, Gunn, and those running the MCU. For all we know, this is a ploy to get more fans excited for the movie believing that Nebula's life may potentially be in danger for this upcoming installment of Guardians of the Galaxy. Or, this could be a negotiating tactic by Gillan to get fans to petition to keep her around so she can up the price on her next deal with Marvel Studios. Or maybe Gillan's just being completely candid with the fans about how she feels about playing her breakthrough role for as long as she has. Nothing's come out regarding Nebula's future from here on out. Odds are, fans will probably will hear more details leading up to when the movie gets released.

If this truly is it for Gillan's portrayal of Nebula, then job well done, Ms. Gillan. Not many characters have gone through the growth that Nebula did throughout the course of her time in the MCU. She started out as an antagonist, developed into an anti-hero, then became a definitive hero over the course of Guardians of the Galaxy to Avengers: Endgame, so it will be interesting to see where they go from here in what could be the last appearance of her character.

Ask any fan about Gillan's portrayal of Nebula, and it's a certainty that they would say that they don't want her out of the picture. At the same time, both Guardians of the Galaxy installments killed off important characters that the audience cared about, so it would fit their MO to have someone as important as Nebula killed off. Should the fans be upset with Nebula's death much like they were with Groot's and Yondu's, that would only demonstrate how masterful Gunn has executed these characters.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be released in theaters on May 5th, 2023.
