The next installment in the delightfully chaotic Guardians of the Galaxy series may still be years away, but that hasn't stopped the hype train from keeping right on schedule. With director James Gunn only just completing work on his highly anticipated sequel/correction known as The Suicide Squad, it looks like he'll soon be ready to go full steam on Volume 3 of the classic rock-obsessed franchise. But in the meantime, Karen Gillan has already seen the script, and she is just as excited to film the movie as audiences are to experience it.

Gillan, who has played the shiny metal rage machine Nebula since the first Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014, recently shared her initial reaction upon first reading the script for the upcoming film. While it's not set to begin shooting until November, it seems as though the script itself is already robust enough to carry plenty of emotional weight on its own, and Gillan can attest to that. In fact, she did just that while discussing her new action film Gunpowder Milkshake.

"I read that script with Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis," Gillan said in an interview with Collider. "We read it together and we both cried and laughed, but there was full tears. It's incredible, I think it's James' strongest work yet with the Guardians and it's just brilliant. It's brilliant and it's emotional and it's funny and it's all of those things that you want." High praise coming from a former Doctor Who companion. Though it, unfortunately, appears highly unlikely that this particular project will include any raggedy men. Well, not that kind, anyway.

Guardians of the Galaxy Karen Gillan Nebula

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will serve as a culmination of everything set up since that first 2014 film, in more ways than one. Not only will Gillan's character Nebula likely fulfill her full character arc from mean robot lady to mean heroic robot lady, but Gunn himself has confirmed he will end his time with the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise after this movie. It's sure to be a bittersweet experience to see everything tied up in a neat little bow that's also soaked in the tears of both the fans and the stars. Granted, by that time, Marvel will probably have already introduced a few dozen new characters anyway. So hey, new friends.

Before when he took on the Guardians of the Galaxy series, Gunn was arguably best known as the guy who wrote the Scooby-Doo movies and reportedly almost made them R-rated (including a cut kiss scene between Daphne and Velma). In fact, he even wrote for the not-particularly-subtle SUDA51 game Lollipop Chainsaw. So it came as a bit of a shock to his fans when he not only launched a big superhero franchise but used it as a vessel to tell some truly heartfelt stories that will surely be remembered for a long time to come. Now, with the end in sight, it's interesting to look back and see what a storied legacy he's left behind, only to look forward at his many more new ideas to come.

Gunn truly has an eclectic range of styles all his own, from Guardians of the Galaxy to his violent cult classic superhero film Super. So while Vol. 3 marks the end of an era, a mind like his is bound to blast out some totally rad new projects before long. Hey, maybe Gillan will join him again. She's clearly got the action chops for it.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 23, 2023.
