In the world of pop culture, Kanye West is never far from the headlines. Between recording record-breaking albums, marrying America's most popular reality TV star, and storming the stage at the Grammy's in protest, it's hard for the producer-turned-rapper to stay out of the spotlight. Moreover, Kanye has been following the lead of his frequent collaborator Jay-Z lately and expanding his empire beyond the world of music and into clothing and footwear. As it turns out, the Kanye brand will soon be entering the gaming world, as well.
West recently appeared on The Breakfast Club radio show (video above) to chat about music, Kim Kardashian, and his new line of sneakers. Towards the end of the interview, West reveals that he's been spending a lot of time working on a video game this year. The game is inspired by his single "Only One," which is about an imagined conversation between West's daughter and his mother, who passed away in 2007.
West didn't go into great detail about the game's mechanics or plot, aside from the inspiration, but did explain that he has been working on it for the last six months. He also offered a bit of an elevator pitch that gives a basic idea of the game's setting...
"The idea is that it’s my mother going through the gates of heaven and you’ve got to bring her to the highest gate of heaven by holding her to the light."
West didn't offer any specifics about platform, developers, publishers, or a release window either. If he's taking notes from other pop culture celebrities moving into the video game realm, then it is pretty likely that the game will be a free-to-play mobile release, despite the very small percentage of spenders in that scene.
We've already seen celebs like Lindsay Lohan (who was recently feuding with Rockstar) release micro-transaction loaded games to the mobile scene. Kanye's own wife, Kim, just pulled in over $85 million from her mobile game, so Kanye has definitely seen the opportunity for profit firsthand. Compared to the openly light-hearted and superficial games released by Lohan and Kardashian, the inspiration for West's game seems very serious if it's just an opportunity to pull in a few million dollars. Kanye has written multiple songs about his mother and clearly had a very close relationship with her.
The song also has a pretty fantastic music video, directed by Spike Jonze to pull inspiration from. Although society seems to be divided into Kanye haters and Kanye enthusiasts, it's possible that gamers may want to keep an eye on this one regardless of which side of the fence they are on. Once a developer and publisher have been confirmed, we'll be able to make a better guess about the quality of the game.
Are you looking forward to Kanye's game or do you think it will be a waste of time? Let us know in the comments.
There is currently no official name or release date for Kanye's video game.
