Kanye West takes to Twitter to announce that his next album will be named after the TurboGrafx-16, a console that is 28 years old.
Kanye West is more involved in the videogame industry than one might think, but few could have seen this coming: Kanye has now declared his next album will be named after an almost 30 year old gaming console called the TurboGrafx-16. The famed hip hop artist went public with the decision via Twitter, and the announcement post had now been retweeted over 42,000 times – likely by many who have no idea what a TurboGrafx-16 is, which is totally fair.
Kanye may not like microtransactions, but he’ll evidently be looking to rack up as many album sales as he can, and nothing generates some free press like a confusing name. The gaming industry likely hasn’t witness more confusion over an item’s name since the Nintendo Wii was announced, and plenty of Kanye fans are sure to be scratching their head at the new album title.
Though he went public with this decision, it’s worth noting that his last album went through several public names before it finally arrived at The Life Of Pablo, so the Turbografx-16 name isn’t set in stone.
Here’s the tweet that started it all:
My next album is titled "Turbo Grafx 16" as of now…— KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) February 27, 2016
The console itself is actually more well-known as the PC Engine in Japan and parts of Europe, and it was the first ever 16-bit console. West stated that the TurboGrafx-16 was his favorite console growing up, and that a game called Blazing Lazers was probably his favorite selection from the console’s lineup. The shoot ’em up title released in 1989, and was highly praised for its use of sound. Part of us really hopes Kanye pays heritage to the game in his upcoming album, because listening to a track named Blazing Lazers in 2016 is something we just realized should be on our bucket list.
West continued to elaborate on his album naming decision via Twitter, stating that he chose the name due to some ‘super nerd vibes’ he is going through at the moment. West stated he owned the TurboGrafx-16 himself as a kid, and went on to state that he has a longstanding history with gaming consoles. His friend Mali, whom he spoke about in the song Drive Slow, reportedly owned a Neo Geo (Metal Slug, anyone?), and Kanye played plenty of Spy Hunter at his Mother’s house back in the day.
Kanye’s decision to name his upcoming album after an ancient console may also be a publicity stunt to loop attention around to his upcoming videogame, which features his own Mother transcending into Heaven. The game features painting-like graphics and looks like it may be worth checking out, although a release date for Only One: The Game hasn’t been set – and for that matter, the studio behind it hasn’t confirmed what platforms the games will release on either.
What do you think about Kanye’s decision to name his upcoming album after the TurboGrafx-16, Ranters?
