The Pokémon series has been running strong for decades now and it’s practically a foregone conclusion that the next game that’s released, whether it’s in the mainline series or some more ambitious spin-off entry, will be a best-seller for Nintendo. The core concept of the Pokémon games remains unchanged, but each new entry manages to advance the formula.
The Kalos region from Generation VI marks an important point for Pokémon and it contains the introduction of many new creatures, some of which have become audience favorites and others that struggle to stand out amongst their more creative brethren. Not every Pokémon is a winner, but the ones looked at in this lot are truly questionable.
10 Bergmite
It's always exciting when a new type of Pokémon is added to the mix, but even though Ice-Types make sense in theory, it does feel redundant in a lot of ways and it's turned out to be one of the least exciting varieties of Pokémon. Bergmite is an Ice-Type from the Kalos region that's basically just an unassuming and harmless iceberg. It's pretty unremarkable, despite the cute premise. Its evolved form, Avalugg, definitely feels like a more distinct Pokémon. Bergmite is just a onenote visual gag that lacks any depth.
9 Spewpa
Bug-Type Pokémon are one of the most reviled varieties of Pokémon and it's difficult for these Pokémon to really stand out. Spewpa is such an unusual situation because its entire evolutionary form feels rushed, almost like the Kalos region is embarrassed and just wants to get this whole experience over with. Spewpa evolves to a Scatterbug and then a Vivillon all by Level 12. It speaks to the inconsequential nature of this Pokémon’s first stage and while Spewpa is cute, it doesn't offer much else.
8 Spritzee
Out of all of the Fairy-Type Pokémon that exist, Spritzee feels the most redundant. The Pokémon would stand out more as a unique type on a Ghost-Type Pokémon, but as another Fairy-Type it doesn’t stick out.
Spritzee manages to become slightly more practical after it evolves into Aromatisse, but it's something that can only be done by trading Spritzee while it holds a Sachet. Spritzee is also viewed as a counterpart to Swirlix, another Fairy-Type Pokémon from the Kalos region that's as equally uneventful.
7 Skiddo
Skiddo is the type of innocuous Pokémon that could have been very popular during Generation I or II, but by the time that Generation VI comes around with Pokémon X and Y, the franchise has to work a little harder for the Pokémon to stand out. Skiddo is strictly a Grass-Type Pokémon that amounts to a cute form of transportation, but there are already many Pokémon that blend together nature and elk-like animals. Its evolved form, Gogoat, is a little more unique, but there are similar Pokémon that do a lot more.
6 Binacle
Some of the most memorable Pokémon from throughout the series are the ones that feature multiple heads and a way to work multiple Pokémon into a single body. Binacle is a Water- and Rock-Type Pokémon from Kalos that tries for the same approach, but it turns out to be forgettable in the end. The Pokémon takes its inspiration from two claws stuck in debris and the Pokémon feels as much like trash as its appearance dictates. Granted, Barbaracle, the Pokémon’s evolved form has a better-designed body, but getting Binacle to Level 39 to see it isn't worth the hassle.
5 Furfrou
Furfrou is a Normal-Type Pokémon from the Kalos region that's modeled after a poodle, right down to the fact that the gimmick of this Pokémon is that Furfrou can be styled in many different ways.
Furfrou's hair can be cut to give it over five different looks and then after five days the fur will grow back and it will go back to its regular state. It's honestly a creative idea for a Pokémon, but it doesn't actually make it practical and as a result it's easy to forget Furfrou.
4 Clauncher
Clauncher is a Water-Type Pokémon from the Kalos region that looks more like a means to an end than a Pokémon that's valued in its own right. Even the look for this Pokémon speaks to its bottom-feeding and parasitic nature. It’s the type of Pokémon that’s found in frustration and quickly ignored while trainers are on the search for bigger fish. Despite Clauncher's forgettable design and demeanor, its evolved form, Clawitzer, is the Pokémon that it should have been from the start. It's an intimidating Water-Type Pokémon that can actually do some damage in battle.
3 Heliolisk
Heliolisk is a Normal- and Electric-Type Pokémon that bears a resemblance to a charming and energetic lizard. If Heliolisk was part of the Starter Pokémon for Pokémon X and Y, it would easily be one of the most popular creatures from the game, but instead it's hidden in obscurity. Part of the reason that Heliolisk is so easy to forget is that it's a Pokémon that's only obtained through the use of a Sun Stone. It's also not immediately clear that a Helioptile will benefit from a Sun Stone as something like a Thunder Stone seems more logical.
2 Skrelp
Skrelp is a Water- and Poison-Type Pokémon from the Kalos region that looks like a depressed version of Generation I's Horsea. The aquatic Pokémon beats a resemblance to both a seahorse and passive kelp, which likely contributes to the Pokémon’s downer attitude. It's a bleak Pokémon who doesn't even necessarily seem happy to exist. This makes it even more tragic that the poor guy has to get all the way to Level 48 to evolve into Dragalge, but that's a Pokémon that's actually weird and interesting.
1 Klefki
There are many Pokémon designs that make perfect sense and feel like the perfect synthesis of real life with the growing Pokémon universe. There are also a selection of Pokémon that feature deeply unusual concepts that either become cult favorites or are just entirely forgotten. Klefki is easily one of the weirdest designs from the entire Pokémon series. It's a Fairy- and Steel-Type Pokémon that's modeled after a ring of keys. The fact that it doesn't evolve from or into any other Pokémon makes Klefki even more of an outlier.
