Justin Roiland's future may be uncertain as he faces impending domestic abuse charges, but it seems that his biggest project will continue on without him. Though Roiland's latest creative endeavor is the video game High on Life, his most famous creation is that of Rick and Morty. Now it looks like the show will stay alive, though without Roiland attached.Adult Swim sent out a tweet via its Rick and Morty Twitter account, stating in very plain language that the company has "cut ties with Justin Roiland." Despite this revelation, the network also stated that the crew is "hard at work on season 7." RELATED: What Could Justin Roiland’s Legal Troubles Mean For The Future of Rick and Morty? The biggest question would be how the show will continue on without Roiland voicing the two titular characters. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources have said that the roles are set to be recast. Without Roiland, that also means that Dan Harmon will remain the sole showrunner for the series, which received a massive 70-episode order in 2018 and is still working its way through that significant amount of content. As of right now, there is no indication on who will be replacing Roiland in the voice cast.

Roiland's charges were revealed earlier this month as a felony complaint from May 2020 was made publicly available. The complaint outlined charges for Roiland that included domestic battery with corporal injury and false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud or deceit, as outlined by a Jane Doe who was in a relationship with Roiland. At the time, Roiland had pleaded not guilty, and has since been presented with a plea offer, but no details of the offer have been made public. Roiland's lawyer is quoted by THR as saying coverage of the case has been "inaccurate," and that he expects all the charges will be dismissed.

The charges against Roiland are serious, and there are legitimate questions about the future of his projects. While it seems like Adult Swim has made it clear where it stands, there has not yet been a statement from Hulu regarding Roiland's other animated sci-fi project Solar Opposites. Roiland also serves as an executive producer for Hulu's newest animated show Koala Man. He also guest-starred in one episode. There is also the big question of how all of this affects the future of Squanch Games. Regardless of how it all turns out, it's clear that the future of Rick and Morty has been determined, at least for the time being.
