Almost exactly a year ago we got our hands on Just Cause 2 and fell in love. The game was so big and so much fun, the weaker story elements didn't even matter. It was an open sandbox game unlike any other and you could perform any stunt you could imagine.

So, with Avalanche Studios just announcing a new upcoming downloadable game, titled Renegade Ops, where does that leave the Just Cause franchise? As it turns out, Avalanche is also currently working on "two huge licenses" that will both release in 2013. Is one of those Just Cause 3?

Avalanche Studios doesn't own the Just Cause IP themselves, but they're certainly attached to it and I wouldn't want to see another developer take the reins. While they can't confirm officially whether they're working on Just Cause 3, take what you will from the words of Renegade Ops senior producer Andreas Thorsén:

"I can't see that Avalanche wouldn't want to continue on the Just Cause series. We love that franchise... I can't really comment on the future of Just Cause... but as we created the IP there is an attachment to the studio even though we don't own the IP."

If we assume one of the two big games is Just Cause 3 - which it is- what is the other "huge" unannounced title? If we go back to September of last year, there was the rumor that surfaced, stemming from tweets from Cory Barlog, the director/writer of God of War II. The news seemed to point towards Barlog working on a movie tie-in game for the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road movie starring Tom Hardy and that he'd be working with Avalanche on said title.

Nothing was confirmed of course and no further news came out of the Avalanche-Mad Max potential relationship, but at the time, Avalanche's Just Cause creator Christofer Sundberg, did say there were three unannounced games we'd hear about in the near future. Are these the three:

  1. Renegade Ops
  2. Just Cause 3
  3. Mad Max: Fury Road

What are your thoughts and expectations?

For now, let's hope Just Cause 3 hits in 2013 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. And don't forget to read our Just Cause 2 review.
