For several years now, a small team of volunteer modders have provided the Just Cause 2 community with a gift that just keeps on giving. The Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod has extended the longevity of the open world action shooter well beyond what many could ever have expected. It's only natural then, that with the release of Just Cause 3, again a fully single-player experience, the Just Cause multiplayer modders would make the jump to the new hotness.

Today the mod team delivered on fan expectations, releasing the first trailer showing what multiplayer will look like in Just Cause 3. The modders' official website debuted this short announcement regarding the trailer and the upcoming mod:

"2016! As we make our way into the New Year we wanted to take a moment to show off a little somethin’ somethin’ we’ve been working on! Introducing, JC3-MP!

We’re incredibly excited to show off the progress we’ve made these last few weeks. Moving forward you can expect frequent updates on our progress along with exciting new developments as they happen."

It's exciting to hear the team planning to continue updating the Just Cause 3 community as development of the mod progresses. The team's official channel has only 10 videos from a five year span, so they're not particularly well known for communication. But with the launch of Just Cause 2's multiplayer mod version 0.2.0 in November and now the Just Cause 3 multiplayer trailer, it's hard to argue they haven't hit a stride.

A majority of the trailer is dedicated to showing players racing each other in assorted vehicles, including hot rods, box cars, boats and planes. Just showing four or five players on-screen at the same time is an exciting prospect. Adding in a player flying overhead in a jet and dropping bombs, each blooming into those beautiful explosions that are truly the highlight of Just Cause 3, really brings the excitement to another level.

Beyond just establishing the concept of multiplayer in Just Cause 3, the trailer doesn't expand on the idea too much. It's certainly not feature rich, nor does it seem to take advantage of Just Cause 3's advanced tech. Yet, considering the increasingly robust Just Cause 2 multiplayer mod and how quickly the team has been able to get a version of the mod up on Just Cause 3, the features must not be too far away. Better yet, it's probably reasonable to expect the mod team to hit the ground running a lot faster since the groundwork has already been laid.

Critical reception for Just Cause 3 has been mixed. It continues to be a mystery as to why multiplayer isn't an official feature in Just Cause. Sure, Avalanche has a DLC Pass planned, but the world of Just Cause feels meant to be explored and destroyed with friends.

The Just Cause 3 multiplayer dev team provided no firm plans to release the mod publicly, but promised to keep everyone update as development progresses. Expect to hear more information on the mod in the months to come.
