Just Cause 3 Features Fun Final Fantasy 7 Easter Egg

By | 11 months ago

Gamers discover another easter egg hidden in Just Cause 3, this time referencing protagonist Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 and his iconic weapon of choice.

Gamers have hunted down an elusive Just Cause 3 easter egg that’s based on Final Fantasy VII. Located at the top of a snowy mountain peak and easy to overlook is a version of the Buster Sword, wielded by the characters Cloud and Zack in Final Fantasy VII and its spin-off games and film.

The sword is not quite identical to the one that Cloud uses in Final Fantasy VII. The base of the blade in Just Cause 3‘s version is slightly more ornate, and the sword itself is lacking the second hole that Cloud’s version has. However, considering that Just Cause 3 is published by Square Enix, developer Avalanche Studios probably placed it there as a nod to their publisher, which is also the developer behind the Final Fantasy series. Unfortunately, the sword is ultimately just there to be looked at, as series protagonist Rico Rodriguez can’t pick it up or use it.

There’s no way to say how long the developers of Just Cause 3 planned for the Buster Sword to be an easter egg in their game, but their timing is impeccable. Considering that this year has seen the original Final Fantasy VII ported to the PS4, as well as the announcement of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, it certainly plays into the hype surrounding the title recently. In addition, Cloud will soon appear as a DLC character in Super Smash Bros., so the nods to the classic title haven’t been limited to companies closely associated with Square Enix.

Just Cause 3‘s massive open world probably holds many more easter eggs that players have yet to discover, especially since the game has been available for just over a week. Fans recently found that Just Cause 3 contains a Dark Souls easter egg, so Avalanche Studios also isn’t limiting itself to referencing games from its publisher.

Just Cause 3 has received criticism and mixed reviews due to its lengthy loading times, technical problems, and lack of multiplayer mode. However, some have still found enjoyment in Just Cause 3‘s over-the-top action. In any case, the attention to detail required to hide these easter eggs for fans to find makes it clear that Avalanche Studios has put a lot of effort into making gamers happy, even if the final product was unfortunately flawed.
