Ever since Avalanche Studios announced details for the continuation of its open world game series of over-the-top destruction with Just Cause 3, action-adventure fans have been excited to finally get a chance to take up the mantle of protagonist Rico Rodriguez once more. The franchise is known for its combination of explosive stunts set in lush, tropical environments, and it’s no different this time around with Just Cause 3, as havoc will almost certainly be wreaked upon the forthcoming title’s setting of the beautiful, albeit fictional Mediterranean island known as Medici.
As evidenced in one of the first gameplay trailers for Just Cause 3, the development team at Avalanche Studios has been hard at work, making sure fans of the series will get their fill of high-octane action and exotic locations in the soon-to-be-released sequel. For those who wish to get a closer look at what kind of efforts and techniques are going on behind the scenes, Avalanche Studios recently put out a video detailing the game’s creators, designers, and developers and the tasks being undertaken to ensure that Just Cause 3‘s launch goes off without a hitch.
As seen in the footage below, a bevy of Avalanche Studios employees are featured, including senior character artist, Mike Knowland, who breaks down the process of creating a character from the ground up, starting with digitally sculpted models in grayscale and leading into texturing. For fans looking for a better understanding of the way the environments are built, junior environment artist, Jesse Bonelli, shows viewers how the world is created to be modular, using one of Just Cause 3‘s military bases as an example.
Later on in the video, fans can witness Avalanche Studios’ game designer Nick Urko refining one of Just Cause 3‘s challenge modes that will allow players to skydive through on-screen rings in a wingsuit race against time so as to rack up points and dominate potential leaderboards. Regarding the series’ importance to the company, Avalanche Studios’ founder and COO, Christofer Sundberg says, “the Just Cause franchise and games have affected all the other games we do at Avalanche. They’ve sort of set the standard for how we approach game design.”
Since the Just Cause games are essentially the bedrock for Avalanche Studios’ style, it’s not only important that it retains elements of what’s made the series such a huge draw thus far, but it’s also crucial to focus on evolving the gameplay – as it will do with enhanced enemy A.I. and increased difficulty. Not to mention, it seems as if the developers are making sure that the main single player features of the title will be as close to peak performance as possible before unnecessarily diverting their attention toward other in-game modes, as no multiplayer will be available on day one.
With less than three months to go before Just Cause 3 drops, Avalanche Studios is surely entering crunch time, as the final phases of the title’s development are being completed. And if the creators’ calm demeanor in today’s video is truly an indication of their actual mindsets, then fans can be certain that the game will exceed expectations.
Just Cause 3 is set to release on December 1, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
