Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has made a big name for himself in the movie industry over the past decade for his roles in Fast & Furious, Moana, and the reboot of the Jumanji, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. Sony has now released a trailer for the upcoming third film in the popular franchise, Jumanji: The Next Level, which is due to hit theatres everywhere this Christmas.

Jumanji: The Next Level is a direct sequel to Welcome to the Jungle with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, actor turned YouTube star Jack Black, and Karen Gillan all reprising their roles, alongside Nick Jonas, Ser'Darius Blain, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Alex Wolff.  The sequel also adds Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina to the cast in an unspecified roled, as well as It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia's Danny DeVito and Lethal Weapon's Danny Glover.

Set following the events of Welcome to the Jungle, the gang is forced to return to the world of Jumanji after Spencer gets trapped while trying to repair the damaged video game cartridge. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan all return as the in-game characters, however, this time around the players have been switched. Before the gang can pick characters, they're pulled into Jumanji along with Spencer's grandfather, played by Danny DeVito, and his friend Milo Walker, played by Danny Glover, who will now be controlling The Rock and Kevin Hart.

Just like in a real video game sequel, brand new enemies and locations can be expected with the trailer showing off arid deserts, snowy mountains, an ancient castle, and a giant Anaconda. Whether Jumanji: The Next Level ties into the upcoming four-player co-op Jumanji game remains to be seen. While all of the same characters are playable, it appears that no-one has entered Jumanji since the events of Welcome to the Jungle, and none of the voice actors have been announced to reprise their roles.

The addition of Danny DeVito and Danny Glover, two actors known for comedic roles in recent years, and the use of character swapping from The Rock and Kevin Hart is a clear indication Jumanji: The Next Level is looking to one-up its predecessor when it comes to comedy. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle's Jake Kasdan returns to the director's chair from a script co-written by himself and Venom writers Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.

Jumanji: The Next Level releases in theatres on December 13, 2019.
