How To Play Wordle
Although the popularity of Wordle has spawned loads of niche copycats and clones, there is only one original. This simple browser title was developed by an indie dev and purchased by the New York Times Games in February. In order to play the version that this article is about, players will need to head to the newspaper's Wordle website the play. The rules are as follows.
First, choose a starting Wordle word. This word should be five-letters long, a real English word, and should have as many common letters as possible in it. Put the chosen word into the Wordle site and press enter. The letters of the chosen word will then change color to give some clues to the real answer of the day.
- Letters that turn green are right and in the right place in the word.
- Yellow letters are right but in the wrong place in the word.
- Gray letters are wrong and will not appear in the final answer.
Given these clues, players have just six total guesses to get to the answer of the day before they fail. There is only one universal word per day; the word resets at 12:00AM local time. In order to keep from spoiling the answer for other players, Wordle has a spoiler-free share button that just copies the colors of the boxes on a player's board.
After a puzzle is completed, the Wordle menu will pop up. This menu will have the stats of anyone who has played just on that browser and device, unless players login with their New York Times account. These stats include puzzles played, winning streaks, and more.
