The Jujutsu Kaisen anime has taken the world by storm. After its first season, it beat out Demon Slayer in manga sales in 2021 while also having a move announced shortly after.

The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie is the 11th highest grossing anime film of all time and is already considered by many to be part of Shonen Jump’s new big 3, picking up the torch left behind by previous heavyweights. MAPPA did a terrific job animating and choreographing the fights of the first season, so what else is there to look forward to in season 2?

How Many Chapters Will Be Adapted

Yuji Itadori Megumi Fushiguro Gojo Satoru Nobara Kugisaki Jujutsu Sorcerers (Jujutsu Kaisen)

The first season of Jujutsu Kaisen was able to adapt the first 64 chapters of the manga in 24 episodes. That is nearly three chapters an episode on average. Usually packing so much content in a short span ends up with missing context and information for the series. However, Jujutsu Kaisen does not suffer from this style of storytelling because the majority of its story is comprised of action and this does not change after the first 64 chapters. If anything the action only intensifies, so it is safe to estimate the same number of chapters being adapted again.

The next important thing to consider is where a good stopping point is. The anime adapted the first 64 chapters because chapter 64 was the end of the Death Painting arc, which consisted of nine chapters. The following arc is about Gojo’s past with Geto Suguru as they are Jujutsu high students and covers a lot of events regarding Megumi and his father.

This arc is incredibly short, only going from chapters 65 to 79. This is where finding a stopping point becomes difficult because the most anticipated arc, the Shibuya incident arc, is 57 chapters. Adapting 64 chapters already seemed like an incredibly hard task but adapting from chapter 65 to 136 would be 71 chapters. This is only 7 more chapters but could be challenging if the animators don’t want to miss any details or important information.

As stated earlier though, a lot of this will primarily be action so Jujutsu Kaisen can fit this into its season two, especially if they opt to do a 26 episode season rather than a 24 episode season. This makes the most sense as stopping in the middle of the arc would not be ideal and Gojo’s backstory arc is essential for understanding the context of the Shibuya incident. In fact, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie was also essential for understanding this arc so more than likely the Shibuya incident will be told from start to finish and end with the introduction of a very popular character from the Movie, as Yuta Okkotsu does show up following the aftermath of the Shibuya incident.

What Events Will Be Shown

Without spoiling what will happen, Gojo's past arc will take about 5 episodes to cover. Actually a good portion of this season will be mostly Gojo in the early parts, perhaps the entire first cour of the series. It would be an easy transition to go from Gojo’s past to the Shibuya incident, but there is a different method the creators may use. There is a specific spot within the Shibuya incident where Gojo reflects on his past with Geto Suguru.

Rather than having the Gojo’s past happen then it may make sense to show that arc right when he has that flashback, to create more pull and tension. Either way, the first cour is going to be perhaps 75% Gojo with other characters weaved in every so often

After that, well the Shibuya incident is going to get into full swing. Expect to see Megumi, Maki, Yuji, Mahito, and Jugo all get lots of screen time and battle scenes as there is not a character that has been introduced in the series thus far that does not get some action in the upcoming arc, excluding Yuta from the movie. Yes Yuta will not appear in the Shibuya incident and neither will Hakari, the third year mentioned by Gojo, so do not expect to see them in season 2.

This is quite exciting. While many fans will still doubt the ability to adapt 71 action-packed episodes in a single season, Mappa has done this before and this should be the most anticipated anime coming out in 2023, and with good reason.
