Jujutsu Kaisen easily became one of the most-watched anime of 2021, and it's safe to say that anyone who's had a taste of that sweet curse wants more of it. Sadly, the second season is nowhere in sight at the moment. But at the very least, their showrunners and creators are throwing fans a bone in the form of Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

It's a film, so there's only give or take 90+ minutes of Jujutsu Kaisen here as opposed to 25 episodes each clocking in at 20+ minutes. But at the this point, fans will likely take anything as long as it has Satoru Gojo in it. Regardless, the trailers have been dropped and the film has been released in select countries (with some countries getting it later). What should fans know before diving into it?

7 It's A Prequel Film

For those confused where Jujutsu Kaisen 0 sits in the adaptation's narrative, it's somewhere in the not-so-distant past. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 takes place around a year before the start of the anime. Hence, Satoru Gojo will have been one year younger here, which isn't much of a difference compared to his level and appearance in the series.

Meanwhile, there will be some new faces involved. The events that took place a year prior to what transpired in the anime are more widespread and dire. In fact, it's actually a full-blown urban warfare, which called for the attention of some freelancers and old friends. More on them later.

6 It Covers The Cursed Child Arc In The Manga

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 will be a direct adaptation of the Cursed Child Arc of the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. Likewise, this is also a flashback arc or prequel series that tells the story of one of the best and most talented among the Jujutsu Sorcerers.

The manga's creator, Gege Akutami, opted to categorize this arc, named Jujutsu Kaisen 0: Jujutsu High, as Chapter 0. It has four chapters in total, but all of them appear as 0-1 for the first, 0-2 for the second, and so on. In any case, it portrays the events in Kyoto that are continually referenced in the anime, and which involved several Jujutsu Sorcerers in an epic battle.

5 It Features Okkotsu As The Protagonist

The best and most talented among the Jujutsu Sorcerers as feared in Jujutsu Kaisen 0? That would be Yuta Okkotsu. Again, he has also been referenced or mentioned in passing in the anime. In fact, some of the Jujutsu Sorcerers in the school were even shocked that Satoru Gojo picked Yuji Itadori as the supposed replacement for Yuta Okkotsu.

Yuta is a dark-haired, troubled teenager who resembles Megumi Fushiguro in the anime. Jujutsu Kaisen 0 thus tells his story and struggle to control the overprotective evil spirit of his childhood friend named Rika, who kept haunting him after she died several years ago. In hindsight, Yuta and Yuji's circumstances aren't that different, since both of them are host to a very powerful curse.

4 Satoru Gojo Again Scouts A Protege

So who cherry-picked Yuta Okkotsu? Well, as some fans might have already guessed, it's Gojo. Gojo does have a habit of choosing the best potential Jujutsu Sorcerers and grooming them to become powerful in his own guiding, even if it disrespects the school's tradition and rules.

Yuta was a prime pick for Gojo. Initially, Yuta wanted to stay as far away as possible after Rika started lashing out and harming some innocents, but Gojo made a counteroffer to let Yuta enroll in the school. This is to help Yuta control Rika and even weaponize her evil spirit, keeping everyone safe from both him and her. It's a similar story to Yuji Itadori's plight with Sukuna.

3 Suguru Geto Is The Main Antagonist

With the protagonists and the heroes of the film established, who's going to be the big bad? That would be Suguru Geto. He's also a Jujutsu Sorcerer and was Satoru Gojo's classmate. They are also close to each other in terms of age, with Gojo only being two years older. Their relationship was that of friendly rivalry, while they were still acting on the school's behalf.

But then, Suguru went rogue as a result of his negative experiences with non-sorcerers. He gradually grew closer to snapping, and one night proceeded to massacre more than a hundred civilians. He was then expelled from the school and was declared as the worst of all curse users. He has a seething disdain for anyone who isn't a sorcerer, which led him to working with curses in the anime. His being alive and well in the anime also means that he somehow survived both Gojo and Yuta Okkotsu in Jujutsu Kaisen 0.

2 It Will Feature The 2nd & 3rd Year Students Of Jujutsu Tech School

In addition to Gojo, Suguru, and Nanami, there will be plenty of other familiar faces from the anime, particularly the 2nd and 3rd Year students of Jujutsu Tech. The 2nd year students from the anime in particular, are getting some lovely spotlights. Those would be Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda. In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, those three are 1st Year students along with Yuta Okkotsu.

Together, they will fight and try to stop Suguru and his genocidal plans. Alongside those, there will also be appearances from some of the 3rd Year students in the anime who would be 2nd Year students in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The most prominent among them would be Aoi Todo, who was also mentioned in the anime as having done something amazingly brutal against curses in Kyoto.

1 There's Lots Of Black Flash In The Film

Nanami_detailing_Black_Flash_(Anime) jjk

Black Flashes are some of the most powerful attacks a Jujutsu Sorcerer can unleash and it's difficult to perform— not even Satoru Gojo can unleash it at will. In the anime, Nanami claimed that his record was four consecutive Black Flashes back to back, something Yuji Itadori managed to equal during the fight with Hanami.

Fans should then be excited to hear that there will be plenty of Black Flash usage in Jujutsu Kaisen 0, most notably from Nanami as the animators did him some justice and animated his amazing record. Yuta Okkotsu is also not lagging behind, as apparently, he'll also showcase his Black Flash in one of the fights. Either way, it's time to be ecstatic about Jujutsu Kaisen once more. All that's left is to wait for a global release.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has premiered in Japanese theatres on December 24, 2021. At the time of writing, it has no confirmed global or western release dates yet.
