Immensely popular dark supernatural anime and manga, Jujutsu Kaisen has continuously been on the rise, first notably becoming one of the best-selling manga series of all time followed up by receiving numerous awards and accolades since the debut of the anime show in 2020. The young anime became one of the most-watched and popular anime series in 2020 and 2021, with Crunchyroll giving the show an award for one of the best of 2020.
With only one season of the show out so far, it came as a little bit of a surprise when a feature-length film, titled Jujutsu Kaisen 0, was announced shortly after the end of the first season. Very few glimpses into the highly-anticipated film have been given so far, but a teaser trailer was just released sharing a key detail. The trailer, which is more of a clip at about 20 seconds in length focuses on a silver ring with a small diamond in it. The ring will be key to an important element of the show, as manga fans will have already guessed.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a follow-up manga series by Gege Akutami, the creator of the orginal manga. The manga has been running all through 2021. The story acts as a prequel to the Jujstu Kaisen show, following a mysterious character Yuta, who played a small role in the anime show, through key moments of his childhood. In the manga, a young girl named Rika gifts Yuka a ring for his birthday and reveals that it is an engagement ring because she wishes for the two of them to marry when they are older. With Rika later subduing a supernatural attack, leaving her body in a sort of possessed fate. The ring is Yuka's only tie to her that can help him save her from the threatening attack.
Fans can only guess at what power the ring holds and what will be in store for the rest of the film. The anime show ran for 24 episodes following misfit high-schooler Yuji Itadori. In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, every living thing emanates something called Cursed Energy, that comes from negative emotions and thought. Normally, people cannot control their Cursed Energy, sometimes breeding spiritual beings called Curses, similar to demons. Some people, called Jujutsu Sorcerers can control the energy and use it for good (or bad). Yuji discovers in the season that he is able to control his Cursed Energy and trains to wield it better and become a Sorcerer.
Jujutsu Kaisen with this new film, promises an in-depth world that is unique compared to other anime. While most anime will continue with the same core characters, this film is different from the show with a different main character and a different plot, just with the same setting and supernatural circumstances. Although no international release date is set yet, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is set to debut in Japan on December 24 2021.
