Thatgamecompany teases its long-awaited follow-up to Journey with a series of photos released on its Twitter and website, pointing to a 2017 release date.
2012's Journey was a huge success for indie developer thatgamecompany, with the title earning acclaim and accolades from gamers, critics, and even The Emmy Awards. Journey ended up on multiple Best Of The Year lists and took the top honors at the annual D.I.C.E. awards. Since then, however, the industry hasn't heard much from thatgamecompany.
That ended on Tuesday. thatgamecompany took to its Twitter and website to tease what appears to be its long-awaited next game. The developer released several photos of what looks like concept art for the title, if not direct screenshots. More concrete information was not available, other than the text with one of the photos that this is "a game about giving."
Taking a look at the teaser in-depth, a few assumptions can be made. The third photo in the teaser makes clear that the game will not arrive until 2017, so this is clearly just the prelude to an official announcement and not an imminent release. The third panel also features a group of four individuals, perhaps two boys and two girls. The middle photo in the teaser is the most interesting, as it gives a feel for what the game's art style could look like. Journey won a lot of acclaim for its fantastic art style and it looks like the artists at Thatgamecompany haven't lost their touch. It's hard to make any assumptions off of one photo, but the image of a mysterious structure on top of a grassy hill under a wide open sky almost has a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild feel to it, doesn't it?
IGN notes in its report that the developer received $7 million in funding to make its next game after the success of Journey, courtesy of venture capital firm Capital Today. thatgamecompany co-founder Jenova Chen once famously said that the company went bankrupt while developing Journey, so hopefully all of that money was put to good use this time around.
At any rate, it's pretty clear that whatever this title is, it will not be a direct follow up to Journey. It will be interesting to see how the game is made available to the public once it does release. Journey was published by Sony and originally released exclusively on the PlayStation 3. It was ported to the PS4 in 2015. But thatgamecompany notes on its website that its next game will be self-published, which opens the door to the game appearing on other platforms. Two previous games from the developer, flOw and Cloud were released on PC.
Journey is out now on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Thatgamecompany's next title will release in 2017.
