Portal 2: Jonathan Coulton & Cake Confirmed

Jonathan Coulton Confirmed for Portal 2

Okay, so the cake was a lie, but the fact that Jonathan Coulton is making a song for Portal 2 is nothing but the truth. Jonathan confirmed that he'll be working on music for upcoming highly anticipated sequel today via his Twitter page.

Other than this single song – which was in his pocket as he was boarding a flight – we have no additional info on how much Coulton will be contributing to the music of Portal 2. It does however, seem that Mr. Coulton might be a bit nervous about flying.

"Closing the doors. If this plane goes down, the Portal 2 song goes with it. It is in my pocket..."

Anyone who attended a gaming convention after the original Portal release, have undoubtedly sung Coulton's previous hit 'Still Alive' in unison with their fellow gamers. It's an experience that warms the heart and one that this gamer hopes to relive at PAX East. Speaking of PAX, those who wish to attend might want to order their passes for the March convention, before they're sold out.

'Still Alive' was simple, catchy and a blast to sing with friends. It makes you wonder what Jonathan Coulton has in store for Valve's Portal 2. The song played during the credits of the original Portal and set us up for the sequel. Will his new song take its rightful spot in the credits of Portal 2 and lead us into Portal 3? Let's hope so.

Portal 2 is also clearly designed with co-op in mind, so it's possible this new song could be a duet. Though the main protagonists of the game don't seem to speak English – or any normal language for the matter – so the possibility for a duet is slim.

Coulton's success with 'Still Alive' goes to show how important music is to gaming. Along with graphics and gameplay, music is essential to setting the mood of a game just like in movies and televsion. One composer that's worth mentioning is Jesper Kyd, who did work on the Assassin's Creed games.  It's highly recommended that fans of the series check out Kyd's work, especially the work he did for Freedom Fighters, a third-person shooter from last generation.

And how can we forget Jose Gonzalez and his touching performance of Red Red Redemption's hit song, 'Far Away.'

Other than Coulton, Gonzalez and Jesper Kyd's work, do you have any favorite video game composers? Let us know in the comments.

Portal 2 will be released on April 19th for PC, Mac, PS3 and Xbox 360.
