JoJo's Bizarre Adventure has been around for a very long time. It has become one of the most-read manga series of all time, and there is no denying the quality of the series. The manga started serializing all the way back in 1987 and it is still going strong. Unlike most manga series, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is divided into parts.

These parts allow Araki to experiment with his ideas and provide a richer experience for the fans. Each part of the series features a unique story and cast. Araki also changes the protagonist of every single part, which is another thing that he does differently in comparison to the rest of the authors. Recently, the trailer for Stone Ocean dropped, which left the fans awestruck, as this meant they would get the opportunity to see Jolyne Cujoh. But what makes her a unique character?

Jolyne's Past

Jolyne Cujoh in Stone Ocean anime

Jolyne takes the lead throughout Stone Ocean. She is the daughter of Jotaro Kujo and an unnamed woman. For the entirety of her childhood, Jolyne only lived with her mother as Jotaro was too busy with his research. Without a father figure to mentor her, Jolyne eventually grew to resent her father. It was very difficult for her to live with just her mother. She became rebellious and a proper delinquent.

This shaped Jolyne as a person. She committed all kinds of mischievous acts just to get her father's attention, and after a series of unfortunate events she ended up going to prison. This left Jolyne with a difficult situation and a lot of sadness and bitterness inside her heart. Her hatred grew to such an extreme that she altered the spelling of "Kujo" to "Cujoh."

Character Development In Green Dolphin Street Prison

Jolyne and Ermes fighting together

Once Jolyne was inside the prison, it changed her in many ways. She was able to make proper friends, such as Ermes, Emporio, Foo Fighters, and Weather Report. All these secondary characters helped Jolyne to understand life better and they also rescued her many times.

However, the most important event that took place inside the prison was her reunion with Jotaro. She was obviously very mad at him, but after Jotaro attempted to free Jolyne, the latter found it in her heart to forgive him. After all, Jotaro risked his own life to save hers and ended up losing his Stand and memory disc in the process. As the story progresses, Jolyne gradually begins to idolize her father more and more.

Towards the end of the series, when Jotaro and co. were fighting against Enrico Pucci, Jotaro had an opportunity to kill Pucci. However, doing so would have meant Jolyne's own death, and in that split second Jotaro made up his mind and he saved Jolyne. Her character development from being a person who hated her father to a person who is dependable and understanding is quite magnificent. She even picked up Jotaro's "Yare yare daze," and turned it into "Yare yare dawa," which is the feminine version.

Stand Ability

Jolyne using Stone Free to attack

Jolyne awakened her Stand when her thumb was pierced by a shard of the Stand arrow. This incident allowed her to awaken Stone Free. Stone Free is a powerful close-range stand that can deal hefty damage to its opponent. In addition to its incredible physical powers, the Stand also allows Jolyne to turn parts of her body into strings. She can increase the range of her attacks by unraveling parts of the body. Jolyne's Stone Free is comparable to Star Platinum (one of the strongest stands in the series) in terms of strength and speed. Stone Free ranks at an A in terms of Development Potential, so with enough training, Jolyne could possibly become one of the strongest characters in the entire series.

Jolyne combines her Stand power expertly with her intelligence. Though she doesn't always show it, Jolyne is an extremely clever person. Throughout the entire Stone Ocean saga, she has managed to get out of many sticky situations with her intelligence and is willing to expose herself to all kinds of risks to get a job done. When confronting Pucci, Jolyne's stand allowed her to counter the ability of C-Moon, which is another impressive feat.

How She Fares In Comparison To Others

Jolyne Cujoh using Stone Free's threads

Jolyne's character is unique and it differs from the other JoJo protagonists in a lot of ways. Jolyne is a very determined individual, who pushes herself to extremes. Once she sets her mind on something, Jolyne will accomplish it at any cost. Unlike Josuke and Jonathan, Jolyne isn't hesitant to kill someone. She holds a grudge against anyone who has ever wronged her, and she will repay an injury in a much more severe fashion.

Like all the other Joestars, Jolyne is very protective of her friends and her family members. On several occasions in Stone Ocean, Jolyne actually risked life and limb to save her friends. Towards the end of Stone Ocean, she is easily one of the strongest characters. She is definitely a unique character and according to Araki, Jolyne was his attempt at creating a proper female protagonist. One of Araki's editors asked him to change Jolyne's gender to a male, but Araki was very adamant about making Jolyne a female character. It is fair to say that Araki's efforts paid off and he managed to make one of the best female anime protagonists.
