Johnny Depp has played some of the most vivid and eccentric characters ever seen in both live-action and animated films. The actor is all over the map and won't back down from a role just because it is different than his usual work. Because of this, he has a unique acting career history with a wide range of stories and subject matter, and even more whimsical and wacky looks to go along with them.

Johnny Depp has such an expressive and emotive face, that even through heavy character makeup, the actor is able to emote well enough to give an expressive performance. Because of this, he has been in multiple Tim Burton films—who is known for his quirky characters that usually require some special effects makeup and extreme costume or wig. That is why Johnny Depp has had so many interesting roles. Some of those looks and roles have been a hit, and others that audiences wish they could forget.

Johnny Depp doesn't truly have a bad role, although some performances are better than others. Even some of his lesser-known roles in films like Arizona Dream and What's Eating Gilbert Grape are interesting (although not as memorable as characters like Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean). One of the better of his lesser-known roles was in the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Johnny Depp gives a very flamboyant and eccentric performance as a drugged-up journalist that rivals performances made by actors like Jim Carrey. Enhanced by the cinematography, Johnny Depp gives an excellent performance in his role as Raoul Duke.

One of Johnny Depp's earliest and most popular roles in a movie was as the title character in Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. This was the first time the actor and director had worked together, and it marked the start of a long friendship and career of the two talents collaborating. This gothic, fantasy romance was the perfect amount of seriousness and playful surrealism, and it had a dream-like quality. Other Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaborations that were Depp's more successful roles came from the movies Sleepy Hollow and Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street, both roles being of a gothic nature. Depp was even nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role as Sweeny Todd.

Johnny Depp even has a role as a voice actor in one of Tim Burton's films playing the character Victor from the movie Corpse Bride. But, many fans seem to think there are some movies that Depp and Burton worked on together that are not so good. Many think the film Charlie in the Chocolate Factory belongs in this category because it didn't live up to the original. This is not true, as the film had several iconic moments and did well with Tim Burton's aesthetic. Johnny Depp's outfit and performance were fun and so was the soundtrack. However, Depp's roles in Dark Shadows and Alice in Wonderland (although well dressed) were boring and forgetful.

There can't be a discussion about Johnny Depp's greatest roles without mentioning the swashbuckler film series, Pirates of the Caribbean. No other actor could have pulled off this wacky antihero character without looking cheap or phony. Depp gave the character Jack Sparrow style and swagger that made him come to life. It felt like this was Jack Sparrow, 'Captain' of the Black Pearl, instead of a movie with an actor in a costume. This is arguably the greatest acting achievement for Johnny Depp in terms of memorability and believability. The actor landed this role when he was about 40, and went on to star in four sequels to the original movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest

Although it is not one of his best or biggest roles, the actor does play the Big Bad Wolf in Disney's Into The Woods—a fantasy musical with phenomenal performances by actors Meryl Streep and Anna Kendrick. The character design of this particular character is not what one would think when hearing the name Big Bad Wolf. Instead of using a CGI wolf, the creators decided to use an actor (Johnny Depp) and make a wolf-human hybrid, which made his final look appear as an aristocrat of sorts with a whisker beard and wolf ears.

Johnny Depp has been in over 80 movies, not including any television roles. It is hard to say which one of his characters is the least likable. And although many would say his role as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean is his best, others might say another role is far superior. One of the lowest-rated movies Depp stars in is Yoga Hosers, a movie about yoga enthusiast teens who fight one-foot-tall Nazis made from bratwursts. But if the viewer is in for a cheesy, B horror movie, it could be a fun watch. It's actually the sequel to another Johnny Depp movie called Tusk, although that one has slightly better reviews. With as extensive of a filmography as Depp has, there's a character of his for everyone to enjoy.
