The John Wick series has always been a pretty rough time for Keanu Reeves' title character. Whether it involves losing his house, his dog, or his own blood, there's an overarching theme of loss throughout the whole thing. But how much influence does Reeves himself have with the series? After all, he's been playing John for nearly a decade at this point, so he's got to have a decent familiarity with it all by now.

Well, it turns out that the next entry in the franchise, the title-pending John Wick: Chapter 4, will feature at least a couple of ideas from Reeves pertaining to his titular beloved anti-hero. It's a pretty standard development that anybody will become intimately familiar with a character after spending so much time embodying them. So at this point, it's less of a surprise and more of a finally-fulfilled foregone conclusion.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter on the red carpet at CinemaCon in April, Reeves and John Wick director Chad Stahelski offered some insight into their mindset when filming the upcoming sequel. As fans already know, each entry seems to ramp up the action scenes to keep things fresh. This time, Reeves helped with that process, telling the interviewer, "I've called out a couple of things, like, 'Let's get on a horse in the desert.' 'Let's drive a little bit.'"

So there's a little tease for what to expect. Granted, "let's drive a little bit" is probably the most standard thing anybody could ask for in a modern movie. But this is John Wick, after all. There are any number of possibilities for what could happen in a car. As for riding a horse in the desert, that's another expected offering, particularly given the desert scenes in the previous movie. The same desert scenes may serve as the catalyst for a possible spinoff featuring Halle Berry's character. But hopefully, if there's action during this part, the horse doesn't get hurt. John Wick fans don't really have the warmest feelings towards watching animals die.

Stahelski also had a few things to say about John Wick: Chapter 4. Circling back around to the theme of loss in the series, the director and his team also just have a standing order to just make things miserable for the unfortunate former assassin. "We keep finding new and interesting ways to have John Wick suffer," Stahelski explained. "That's where the action comes from. Figure out how to make him suffer, and then design backward." Similar to stories told about the Uncharted game series and its set pieces, it looks like the folks behind John Wick focus on John's misery first and foremost before writing around it. He's probably thankful for that.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is still a bit of a stone's launch away from release after being delayed last year, but it's clear that everyone involved is still putting everything they can into it. Here's hoping it offers the same high-adrenaline thrills the rest of the series is known for.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is set to release theatrically on March 24th, 2023.
