John Wick 5 has been announced and yes, that's the correct number. Production of the fifth installment in the addictive Keanu Reeves action series was just officially confirmed by Lionsgate before John Wick 4 has even released. Hey, it never hurts to plan ahead.

In an earnings call with Lionsgate CEO John Feltheimer, the head honcho not only revealed that the studio is currently working on scripts for the next two films, but that they are also set to shoot back to back. As it is, John Wick 4 is currently aiming to drop on May 27th 2022, with shooting to begin early 2021. Meanwhile, Starz is gearing up for a John Wick spinoff show called The Continental, centering around the neutral ground hotel from the films. Keanu Reeves is reportedly going to appear on the show in some capacity, though his time is presently occupied filming the highly anticipated Matrix 4.

The most recent film in the John Wick franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, ended with a bit of cliffhanger regarding not only the titular character's condition, but the state of the assassin-filled world in which he lives. The confirmation of at least two more entries in the series may not necessarily spoil these mysteries, but it's admittedly more difficult to feel a sense of suspense regarding the main character's fate when you know another entry is confirmed. Still, fans of the dog-loving assassin tend to agree that John Wick movies are less about realism and more about pulse pounding action.

The John Wick series is known for its brutal gunplay and matching impressive cinematography. Directed by stunt performer-turned-director Chad Stahelski, it follows John Wick himself, a retired assassin who just can't seem to get out of the old business. While the action is the focal point, there are certain themes at play throughout. Overtones of guilt, revenge, and confinement permeate the overarching story, just enough to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat between gunfights. The themes and overall artistry involved with the productions may be a substantial reason why fans keep coming back.

It's always pleasant news to hear of a new John Wick film. Even with all the talent and passion behind them, sometimes their greatest strength is just being incredibly satisfying popcorn flicks. It's a power fantasy story spread over as many movies as they can crank out, with the added bonus of some surprising depth to keep the viewer engaged. With two more on the horizon as well as a TV series to boot, it's comforting to know there's more to look forward to.
