When the first Doom game came out in 1993, id Software founders John Carmack and John Romero probably did not realize just how much an impact it would have on the gaming world. Both the original game, and Doom 2, have been landmark titles in kickstarting the FPS genre. One of the things that has kept the older games going for so long is mods, like the Doom 2 add-on which is made entirely out of post-in notes. So many decades later, and fans are still building additional content for the original classics. One of those people is Romero himself.

Speaking in an interview recently, the ex-id Software programmer was asked about any new projects that were currently being worked on. Taking a second to think about it, John Romero told Bridgeburner that he has been making some "cool" maps for Sigil 2, an upcoming mod for Doom 2. While it's a long interview, the part about Sigil 2 can be found at around the 42:11 mark.

When asked about a possible release date, Romero suggested that it wouldn't be coming out soon. He also said that this is a mod for Doom 2 specifically, and not the original Doom, which the first Sigil mod was made for and has been labelled as an unofficial fifth episode to the game. Romero has always been supportive of the modding community, believing that modders should be "rewarded" for their work, adding that if game companies reward programmers and designers, why shouldn't people in the community be treated the same.

Even though the reboot of Doom, and the subsequent Doom Eternal, are seen in such high regard and proof that the franchise is far from dead, many continue to return to the original games. These are typically given a ton of love from fans and modders so John Romero talking about Sigil 2 is likely to draw some attention. While it's usually the fan base that tends to put out the majority of the custom maps, it's not unusual for big companies to do the same. Recently, Bethesda also released some new add-ons for the original Doom games.

The fact that John Romero himself is working on the mod is exciting enough for most fans. The chance to see more content from the original creator shows that he is just as keen to return to the original games as the fans are. With his unofficial Doom mod being released in 2019, fans hope that his latest addition will be just as popular and help keep the love for his and Carmack's creation going for even longer.

Sigil 2 is being worked on for Doom 2, but no release date has been announced yet.
