The Afterparty season 2 is really ramping up the anticipation with its already stacked cast of newcomers. The surprise hit show has added yet another heavy-hitter to its roster for the next batch of episodes, and it only takes barely a second of thinking to conclude that he's an excellent choice.
John Cho, star of Searching, the recent Star Trek films, and Netflix's criminally underrated live-action Cowboy Bebop series, is now the latest addition to the second season of The Afterparty on Apple TV+, adding his own star power to the already magnificently sparkling cast list. He'll be joining returning actors Tiffany Haddish as Detective Danner, Zoë Chao as Zoe, and Sam Richardson as Aniq, along with a plethora of new faces. Similar to stories like Knives Out and Murder on the Orient Express, it looks as though The Afterparty wants to keep its charismatic detective around to solve a new mystery every season.
Cho will play a character simply known as Ulysses, presumably yet another guest at the wedding set to be the centerpiece for this season's new murder mystery. He'll be joining Ken Jeong, who also just signed on to The Afterparty season 2 as Feng. They'll be part of a new group of actors that also includes Elizabeth Perkins, Zach Woods, Paul Walter Hauser, Poppy Liu, Anna Konkle, Jack Whitehall, and Vivian Wu. So it appears as if the series' love of star-studded casts will stay strong going forward.
The Afterparty follows Haddish's determined detective as she questions everyone at a high school reunion after their famous classmate is found dead. With each interrogation, she gets a new perspective on the night told to the viewers in a completely new genre, with one character maybe telling it as a romantic comedy while another might have seen it as a psychological thriller. It's up to her, and the viewers, to try to spot inconsistencies and piece together the truths across all the different tales. Luckily, as a show from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse producers Chris Miller and Phil Lord, it all comes across with plenty of snappy writing and humor to keep things moving smoothly.
Cho has proven his own versatile acting chops time and time again. Earning praise for his comedic acting with the Harold and Kumar movies, he flawlessly transitioned to drama and action with films like the suspenseful and creative Searching, told entirely through computer screens, and the action-packed Star Trek cinematic entries. His presence on Netflix's Cowboy Bebop added a nice combination of the two, but while The Afterparty certainly has some suspense and drama going for it, odds are Cho's comedy skills will be at the forefront here.
The first season of The Afterparty caught a lot of people by surprise, with its well-told twists and hilarious antics holding it all together. So hopes for the continuation are likely high, and there's little reason to suspect those expectations won't be fulfilled.
