F9: The Fast Saga star John Cena revealed his favorite scene from the Fast and Furious franchise. The main saga includes eight direct sequels, which have cumulatively grossed over $6 billion at the global box office.
Fast and Furious veteran filmmaker Justin Lin, who helmed the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth films in the iconic 20-year-old action franchise, directed F9. Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Charlize Theron are all reprising their roles from the previous films. Franchise newcomer, Cena, plays Jakob, a master thief who is also the brother to Dom and Mia. The sequel to 2017’s The Fate of the Furious broke pandemic box office records by grossing $70 million in its North American opening weekend.
In a recent interview with CinePOP, Cena revealed that the final moment in 2006’s Tokyo Drift is his favorite because it sets up the beginning of the Fast and Furious franchise. The scene he is referring to features Dom challenging Sean (Lucas Black) in a 1970 Plymouth Road Runner. “My absolute favorite moment in all of the Fast and Furious franchise is the button scene in Tokyo Drift when Dom comes up with the charger, and it's really iconic to me and means a lot to me because the franchise is kind of finding its footing and you don't necessarily know what's going to happen, and you probably watch Tokyo Drift and think, ‘Well, this is going to be the end,’” said the star. The third installment also saw fan-favorite character Han Lue (Sung Kang) die. Fans were shocked when the F9 trailer showed that Dom’s old friend is still alive.
Lin previously stated that the tenth and eleventh Fast and Furious films will be the final two entries in the main saga. The decision to end the saga with two films was inspired by Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. The acclaimed filmmaker recently teased that the finals entries may bring back Paul Walker, who tragically passed away in 2013. Lin stated that he thinks about bringing back Walker’s Brian O’Conner every day and that he could return with the help of CGI.
Cena will next be seen as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker spin-off series. The tenth film in the DCEU will see a group of convicts from Belle Reve Hospital join Task Force X and attempt to destroy a Nazi-era prison and laboratory. The ensemble cast includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark. Gunn noted that the film drew inspiration from John Ostrander's 1980s Suicide Squad comics and will feature a narrative separate from the first film’s story arc. The Suicide Squad will be available on HBO Max and in theaters starting August 6.
Meanwhile, Peacemaker is slated to premiere on HBO Max early next year. Gunn teased that the eight-episode first season will explore current social issues through the eyes of the world’s biggest douchebag. Steve Agee and Jennifer Holland will reprise their roles from The Suicide Squad in the upcoming series.
F9: The Fast Saga can be currently seen in theatres.
