Iconic horror director John Carpenter, who's notable films include Halloween, Escape From New York, and The Thing, may have accidentally leaked that a Dead Space movie is in the works. Considered to be one of the most anticipated video games of 2023 so far, many fans, especially those who love survival horror, are excited about this modern take on Visceral's beloved 2008 release. Given that there have been a number of TV and cinema adaptations of video games lately, it wouldn't be too surprising if Dead Space was picked up as well.
As for the director himself, while he's known almost exclusively for some legendary movies, he's also a keen gamer. In fact, it was just last year when John Carpenter said he would like to make a Dead Space film. However, this wasn't him admitting that one was currently being made. It was more something he would hypothetically be interested in, and it would make sense if he were to direct an adaptation, as the game and the director's previous work go hand in hand in terms of their body horror themes.
However, Carpenter has recently spoken to Variety and may have accidentally slipped up when discussing a possible Dead Space movie. When asked about whether there was anymore to say about the subject, Carpenter said he was surprised that his last remarks about an adaptation made the rounds. He indicated that he was involved in no such project and then said that he thinks "they already have another director involved," which suggests that there is something in the pipeline. It's possible this was just a throwaway statement, but some may interpret it as a sliver of hope for an adaptation of the horror game. However, it's definitely not enough to get any hopes up at this stage.
If there is a Dead Space movie, he is unlikely to be attached to it, which would be a shame. John Carpenter's love of video games, with some of his recent favorites including Fallout 76, Borderlands, and Horizon: Forbidden West, would make him the ideal director for such a film, especially given his past reputation when it comes to horror.
At the moment, there's no definitive way to say whether EA Motive/Visceral's game will be coming to the big or small screen. With the original Dead Space turning 15 years old this year, some would argue that an adaptation has been a long time coming, but at least fans have the remake to look forward to.
