At an autograph-signing event hosted by Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, one fan asked what the potential 2023 NFL MVP's favorite video game was, and discovered what he's playing right now. Surprisingly, the answer was not Madden 23, however, it would be safe to assume the star quarterback has dabbled in some Madden 23 at some point in his career.

Sunday, January 29 marks the date for the NFL's AFC Championship Game. The Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs will host Joe Burrow's Cincinnati Bengals in a match to decide who gets to represent the AFC in the 2023 Super Bowl. While both teams prepare for the big game, there is undoubtedly little time for the players to enjoy video games. Madden 23 is celebrating the culmination of the 2023 NFL season by releasing a week of new content for players. Among the new additions are limited-time challenges, player packs for the MUT game mode, and Lombardi Up collectibles, which frame unique scenarios that may happen during the Super Bowl.

User bigbo1mcgee posted their recent rendezvous with Joe Burrow at a fan event. Getting their jersey signed by the young Bengals superstar, bigbo1mcgee asked Burrow what his favorite video game was. "I've been playing a lot of Star Wars Battlefront right now," was the quarterback's confident reply. While he may have meant the 2005 Star Wars Battlefront 2 by Pandemic Studios, in all likelihood he was referring to DICE's 2017 version, which after a tumultuous launch of its Star Wars Battlefront 2, settled into a well-regarded spiritual successor to Pandemic Studio's original.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 faced serious backlash and controversy during its release. Considered by some fans to be one of the more egregious price-gouging, pay-to-win monetization models of all time, DICE faced the criticism head-on, eventually moving away from its predatory microtransactions and loot boxes, adding free content and balance changes until the game was up to the bar its fans set for it. Still boasting a healthy player base six years post-launch, Star Wars Battlefront 2 is now held in esteem as one of gaming's biggest positive turnarounds. With an average player count of over 1,600 active players during the month of January according to SteamCharts, Joe Burrow is in good company.

While the young quarterback Joe Burrow will not have much time for gaming until his season is over, there is sure to be plenty blasting of stormtroopers and assaulting of starships in Star Wars Battlefront 2 during the offseason. Whether that begins after Sunday's AFC Championship game or February 12's Super Bowl is yet to be seen.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
