True Detective: Night Country has cast a true acting legend to star in its upcoming season. Jodie Foster has been cast in the upcoming season of HBO's True Detective, marking her return to television as a regular for the first time since the 1970s.
Foster has solidified herself as one of the acting greats in Hollywood, but she hasn't been involved in television much in the past couple of decades. Foster, who is both an Oscar-winning actress and director, has also been slated as executive producer of HBO's True Detective season 4.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Foster has been cast to star as Liz Danvers. While other cast members have not been cast as of now, Issa Lopez and Alan Page Arriaga have been tasked with writing the script as well as being executive producers. Lopez is also slated to direct multiple episodes. Filmmaker Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak are also slated as executive producers. Mari Jo Winkler as well as original stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are also slated as executive producers. HBO described the premise of the upcoming True Detective: Night Country in an official statement following their casting of Foster. “When the long winter night falls in Ennis, Alaska, the six men that operate the Tsalal Arctic Research Station vanish without a trace. To solve the case, Detectives Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
This upcoming season of True Detective will be the first season of the show since 2019. As expected, this upcoming season will have no relation to the other previous series which starred McConaughey, Harrelson, Collin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn, Mahershala Ali, and Ray Fisher. Foster's casting as the lead is the first time the show has cast a female in the lead role. With her experience, they can rely on her to bring her A-game.
Viewers should be excited if they know anything about Foster's previous work. Foster established herself as an acting prodigy who was capable of playing any role possible when she played a child prostitute in Taxi Driver when she was only 12 years old. Throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, Foster further established herself as an acting powerhouse in movies like The Accused, The Silence of the Lambs, and Nell, all of which are films that earned her an Oscar nomination or win for her performance. At several points in her career, she's been involved in foreign films. Foster hasn't been involved in films much lately as an actor, but she has dabbled in directing, filmmaking, and producing.
As far as casting leads in general goes, there might not be one as perfect for True Detective as Foster because she is one of those actors who, whether the film she's in is bad or not, will give it her all no matter what. True Detective's quality has fluctuated over the years, but it's usually been pretty compelling television. With Foster on board, they could very well be making their best season yet.
