Showtime has announced that J.J. Abrams will be tackling one of life’s greatest mysteries - UFOs. He will be the producer of a four-part documentary series titled UFO, which will be debuting on Showtime, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ViacomCBS Inc. The production of the series is coming at a crucial turning point in which the U.S. government has reported that they have been taking UFOs much more seriously as of late.

Fueled by The New York Times' 2017 report on the Pentagon tracking UFOs for several years, Abrams' docu-series will at least provide a more informed conclusion as to where the UFOs stem from and how to go about categorizing their presence. One possibility is that this scientific wonder is completely abstract in nature- spanning outside the realms of this Earth, leaning towards alien technology. On the other hand, the explanation could be much more grounded in science, delving into the theory that there may be another generation of top classified aircraft. The series also promises to investigate the extent of the role that the American government and military have in keeping this hush in order to further fuel their own private plans.

With a slate of DC projects already on his plate, Abrams has taken heed of this opportunity to explore a subject that has been shielded from society. Abrams will not be alone in this mystical endeavor, as he will be joined directors Mark Monroe and Paul Crowder. The three of them coming together for this project feels as if they are a space force with a big mission ahead of them - to film and try to capture the unknown. The synopsis that Showtime has written for the series reads - “As the conversation grows more bizarre and reaches the mainstream by virtue of credible investigations into alien encounters, UFO confronts the most enigmatic question of all: Why do we believe what we believe? What is the elusive truth behind this decades-long mystery?”

J.J. Abrams UFO

Not only does this docu-series guarantee the illumination of hidden knowledge that has been kept from the public, but it also promises to reveal major findings and testimonies. This concept of producing a docu-series on a topic that is elusive may be quite groundbreaking. UFO is a co-production between Zipper Bros Films and Abrams' Bad Robot.

The Pentagon intends to start dishing out new UFO discoveries to the public every six months. The docu-series may have been instrumental in discovering just how much the public desires to know more, to be a part of this miraculous object in the sky. Perhaps Abrams' UFO will bridge the gap between faith and logic.

Fans of Abrams' work may not be surprised to see the filmmaker explore the topic of UFOs. After all, Abrams' work on Star Wars and Star Trek suggests he has an interest in space.

UFO will be available for streaming through Showtime on August 8th, 2021.
