It's fascinating to think how Sonic the Hedgehog now has his own movie universe with a fully fleshed-out canon and everything, separate from the games as it may be. It's like if that rather infamous Super Mario Bros. movie from the '90s not only proved a success, but also got a sequel and seal of approval from Shigeru Miyamoto himself. This is truly one of the most confusing timelines.

The thing is, with a newly-established canon comes the opportunity (or perhaps necessity) for supplemental materials. While the world isn't quite ready for Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie: The Game just yet, it's already begun delving into the realm of comic books. But what is possibly more surprising than the existence of a comic based on the Sonic movies is the fact that a certain mad scientist himself has actually contributed to its creation. No, not Dr. Wily. Though the very mention of him in this context just set a million fanfic writers' keyboards ablaze.

Jim Carrey, who has found recent success as Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and its upcoming sequel, actually played a part in the creation of a tie-in comic about his character. Author Kiel Phegley, who wrote the first film's novelization, has begun delving into the world of comic books. His upcoming series of stories set between the 2020 movie and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will apparently feature one entry focusing on Robotnik, and Carrey himself reportedly spearheaded that particular effort.

Calling it "the official 'Pre-Quill'" to the retro-inspired Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Phegley excitedly announced the new release on Twitter, making sure to give a shout-out to his collaborators. This includes comic artists Evan Stanley, Tracy Yardley, and Adam Bryce Thomas, along with Riley Farmer and David Mariotte of IDW Publishing, who brought him into the fold. But in his final tweet of the short and very energetic thread, Phegley revealed Carrey's involvement in the comic's Robotnik story.

"If you need any more incentive to order a copy of Sonic The Hedgehog 2: The Official Movie Pre-Quill comic," Phegley wrote, "the Robotnik story was spearheaded by the absolute G.O.A.T. Mr. @JimCarrey! It's really weird & dope." The thread doesn't offer any detail on the actual process, but just the knowledge that the famously delightful mind behind performances like Ace Ventura and The Mask has gone to work fleshing out the character of Dr. Robotnik is a prospect worth excitement. Not only does it inspire confidence in the story itself, but it tells audiences that he's super into the role, and that's one endorsement that's definitely worth more than a few somethings. Though it's worth noting that Carrey didn't technically write for the comic, only helped "spearhead" its creation.

If there's one sentence that adequately describes most of Carrey's best roles and performances, it's "really weird and dope." Here's hoping that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 isn't his last time donning the goggles and mustache. The world needs more over-the-top madness like this, particularly to help counter the over-the-top madness that's already an everyday occurrence.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will release in U.S. theaters on April 8th, 2022.
