Scream 6 star Jenna Ortega has some ideas for the perfect classic slasher film to pair with the new sequel, including Dario Argento's Deep Red.

After three decades of amassing horror fans, the Scream franchise's latest installment drops this week, meaning the return of the newest scream queen favorite Ortega, who has been winning fans with her appearances in Scream 5, Ty West's X, and her role as Wednesday Addams in the popular Netflix series Wednesday. Ortega returns this week as one of the surviving sisters of the last film, Tara Carpenter, pursued by another new incarnation of Ghostface. The actress has often spoken about her love of horror entertainment, which has made her gravitate to roles in the genre.

In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, Ortega recommended one of her slasher favorites, famed Italian director Dario Argento's 1975 film Deep Red. “I really don’t know that this works as a double feature, but I’ve been talking about that film, Deep Red,” Ortega says, “which is a ’70s, slasher, masked killer; you don’t know who it is. Epic deaths, disco music playing during the deaths. I think it’s just a good time and beautifully shot.” Argento, one of horror's most renowned directors of the past century, is known for his gore and violence. Contemporary filmmakers often cite his style as an inspiration for the American slasher genre. His legacy includes films like Suspiria (1977), Tenebrae (1982), and Phenomena (1985).

Ortega's other recommendations for excellent horror include 1980s Prom Night, which stars fellow scream queen and final girl, Jamie Lee Curtis. In Scream 5, Ortega's character Tara chides her murderous prank caller in the opening scene over slashers and her love of elevated horror like The Babadook. However, Ortega herself may harbor more of a taste for classic old-school slice and dice.

While Ortega's character bore the brunt of stabs and still managed to survive Scream 5 along with her sister (played by Melissa Barrera), the possibility of Ortega becoming e the next ongoing heroine of the Scream franchise is promising. That is if she manages to survive the new film. Ortega may become the Scream franchise’s new final girl, especially since Sydney Prescott actress Neve Campbell is sitting Scream 6 out due to pay considerations. While details and the killer's identity are still closely under wraps, even among cast members of the new sequel, anything is possible.

Scream 6 will be released in theaters on March 10th, 2023.
