The Batman star Jeffrey Wright has recently reflected on his experience playing an iconic DC character. One of DC's most beloved and famous heroes is getting yet another big screen adaptation. However, in this adaptation, the Bruce Wayne many fans have come to know and love deeply may be nothing but a mere stranger to them while on screen.
The Batman, which features Twilight actor Robert Pattinson taking on the role as Batman, has promised a much darker, deeper interpretation than the previous movies have displayed throughout the franchise’s continued success over the years. The movie is set to take place during Batman's second year of him being Gotham’s prestigious knight. Director Matt Reeves is at the helm of the project, and he is very responsible for the film’s edge and sinister reveal of the evil that lurks amongst us all - even those deemed solely “good” or morally righteous to society.
Catwoman (Zoe Kravitz), a pre-Penguin Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) and Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis) are all set to share the big screen with the hero as well. Taking on such legendary heroes comes with a huge sense of importance and pressure. Screen Rant recently sat down with Wright, who will be playing the famous Jim Gordon. Wright stated, “It’s not trivial stuff. That comes with its responsibilities. Like Paul, I don’t know if it’s scary, or it’s thrilling. I think it’s thrilling, and it’s an exciting challenge to take on.” Luckily, Wright's nerves on making sure he lives up to the weight of fan’s expectations doesn’t seem as though it’s getting in the way of his pure enthusiasm to have the opportunity to play such an iconic character in the DCEU.
Wright's mention of "Paul" refers to Paul Dano, the actor portraying the masked Riddler, who happens to be the mastermind behind a series of murders. It will require every ounce of super-human strength the tired hero has left in order to solve the puzzle laid out before him. Batman luckily isn’t completely alone on his mission, as the film features several other infamous DC characters, as previously mentioned.
Despite the many actors and their various interpretations of Wright's character throughout the years, it’s clear he isn’t letting that discourage him from being able to bring something new to the table. The Batman is expected to be the character’s largest, most highly-anticipated movie yet. It may even go down in history as the fansbase’s favorite film in the franchise.
The Batman will be in theaters on March 4th, 2022.
