Ever since Disney acquired Twentieth Century Fox in 2019, Marvel fans have been itching to find out exactly what the studio has planned for the X-Men. The ultimate dream would be to have the infamous band of mutants join forces with the MCU's main line-up of superheroes, particularly the Avengers. But who will play the iconic characters from the Fox franchise? While it would be ideal to have the original actors like James McAvoy reprise their roles, it is not guaranteed at this point.

During a recent interview with ComicBook.com, McAvoy discussed whether or not he would be returning as Professor X in the MCU. Although he said that he will always be open to the role as long as it is written well, he also added that he feels he's had a good ending with Charles and that he already got to explore a lot of the character's story, particularly with the first two X-Men movies. Should Marvel Studios decide to recast him, McAvoy will respect the decision, saying that he's happy with the time that he spent in the role.

Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, has remained rather hush about the studio's plan regarding the X-Men. However, the X-Men's MCU debut is definitely in the works and has been confirmed to happen sometime in the near future. In fact, there have already been some hints that the reintroduction is underway.

X-Men First Class

One of the earliest indications was when Evan Peters made a surprise appearance as Quicksilver (or, at least, a version of him) in WandaVision, marking the first time a character from the Fox franchise was shown in the MCU. There's also a theory that Mystique was secretly in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier as Sharon Carter, with several subtle clues showing up throughout the show. Most recently, Ryan Reynolds confirmed via a promotional video for Free Guy that Deadpool will officially be joining the MCU.

Still, at this point, it's unclear whether or not the rest of the original cast would be on board with reprising their X-Men roles in the MCU. A previous report claimed that Jennifer Lawrence would love to be a part of the MCU, but not as Mystique. Additionally, the contractual statuses of other stars such as Patrick Stewart (Old Professor X), Ian McKellen (Old Magneto), Michael Fassbender (Young Magneto), Famke Janssen (Old Jean Grey), Sophie Turner (Young Jean Grey), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), and Halle Berry (Storm) are still up in the air.

Perhaps the biggest speculation regards whether or not the studio will be casting a new Wolverine. While it's unlikely that Hugh Jackman will want to reprise the role, Marvel fans are still hoping he will appear in a future MCU title, even if just for a short cameo. That said, given the ongoing development of the multiverse in Phase 4, anything is possible.

The X-Men films are available on Disney Plus in Canada.
