Since the release of The Suicide Squad this year, director James Gunn has treated fans to a host of behind-the-scenes footage, giving tons of insight into the making of the superhero blockbuster. The latest is a video that Gunn shared on social media, which shows footage of the crew planning Harley Quinn's epic escape scene.

The Suicide Squad (2021) marked Margot Robbie's third stint as DC's so-called Clown Princess of Crime, Harley Quinn. She made her first appearance as Quinn in 2016's much-maligned Suicide Squad directed by David Ayer. Gunn's iteration was much more successful, both critically and with fans, grossing over $167 million at the global box office. Gunn even claimed that the movie boasts more practical effects than all movies in the MCU combined.

The stunt coordinator for Ayer's Suicide Squad, Guy Norris, was also enlisted for Gunn's movie, and it's him who appears in the tweeted video of the stunt planning. The famous escape sequence scene follows Harley fighting her way out of the presidential residence of Corto Maltese and contains original combat choreography played out in slow motion. Gunn describes his behind-the-scenes footage as an early video, taken while designing Harley's run. The clip shows Norris in a harness going through the motions planned for Robbie, flying off the walls and "knocking down" other crew members with prop guns who are playing Harley's enemies. It's not the only behind-the-scenes video shared by Gunn, who also posted a video of Nathan Fillion dancing in October.

Many fans are noting the similarity between the clip and the final scene, barring the camera angle. The scene that made the cut is resplendent with digital effects, like the pouring flowers instead of spraying blood, but fans are loving seeing the bare bones of how such a famous scene was made. In a reply to a fan question on Twitter after he posted the video, Gunn shared an insight into his creative process behind such scenes. He said that though it does vary depending on the scene, in this case, it began with Gunn's storyboards before going to the stunt coordinator. He clarified that for fight scenes or "regular action," he always works like this, as opposed to using digital programs. In August, Gunn also shared the surprising video game inspiration behind the famous Harley Quinn scene.

Gunn's video of the making of the impressive stunt demonstrates the sheer amount of knowledge and expertise of the people who choreograph them. It's an oft-overlooked part of filmmaking but an absolutely integral one, especially in big superhero blockbuster movies whose action hinges on meticulously-planned stunts like these. Back in February, a video dropped of stunt performer Joanna Bennett practicing a Captain Marvel fight scene for Brie Larson, which was equally impressive.

Norris himself is a stunt performer who has been in the business a long time, starting his career as part of the team who performed stunts for Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981. He'll also be coordinating stunts for the Fury Road prequel, Furiosa, which is slated for a 2024 release. Meanwhile, fans waiting for the next Gunn project will be pleased to learn that the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie has begun filming, set for a 2023 release.

The Suicide Squad is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
