Ever since The Suicide Squad was released in August, director James Gunn has been releasing behind-the-scenes images, videos, and information to help fans connect with the characters even more. Gunn has now released images of the first table read for The Suicide Squad, which took place in September 2019.
An integral part of film production is the first table read, where all the actors come together to read through the script of the film for the first time. These typically occur before the shoot begins and are attended by the cast and important crew members, and the same was true for The Suicide Squad.
In the images from The Suicide Squad table read, all the main cast members are seen sitting in a rather large room, around a big table, reading through what is obviously the script for the popular movie. The cast visible in the photos includes Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Idris Elba, Daniela Melchior, Steve Agee, David Dastmalchian, Peter Capaldi, Michael Rooker, Nathan Fillion, Sean Gunn, Jennifer Holland, and Tinashe Kajese-Bolden. John Cena, who plays the role of Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad, and Viola Davis, who portrays the role of Amanda Waller, are both not visible in any of the images. This isn’t the first time that Gunn has released images from the first table read, though.
In September 2020, the director posted a few images from the same event on Twitter. However, at the time he had mentioned that he wasn’t sharing pictures of some of the cast members as they were seated in front of “spoiler concept art.” Many of his followers asked if they would ever get to see the art, and Gunn had promised that he would reveal it once the film had been released. Keeping his word, Gunn’s latest images showcase the concept art that was on display during the first table read of The Suicide Squad. It is evidently positioned behind the seats of most of the main The Suicide Squad cast members, including Elba, Melchior, Agee, Dastmalchian, and Capaldi. This explains why these actors were not visible in the first set of photos that Gunn had shared.
The concept art showcases some of the major moments in the film. Many of the ones placed behind some of the main cast members highlight moments towards the end of The Suicide Squad when the characters arrive at Jotunheim and discover the massive secret that the government has been hiding.
The art shows Jotunheim crumbling after the team sets off explosives in the tower, Elba’s Bloodsport hanging on for dear life, and Starro wreaking havoc on the island. Some of the other art in the room consists of hand-drawn images of the different characters, including Peacemaker, Colonel Rick Flag, and Bloodsport.
The Suicide Squad is now available on Blu-ray and DVD.
