It looks like fans won't have to campaign for a Gunn Cut of upcoming DCEU film The Suicide Squad to be released in the future, because director James Gunn took to Twitter to say that not only is the movie fully finished but that he had nearly full control over the edits.

When doing a small Q&A on the social media platform someone asked if the film was what he wanted it to be and if Warner Bros. had taken control over it. Gunn responded with, "The Suicide Squad is fully finished and cut and I made every single choice and they never once even slightly interfered. They gave very few notes - they were usually good and minor and I took them if I wanted to and didn't if I didn't want to. Warners was creatively amazing."

While some might expect this to bring on a lot of excitement from fans, and it did, the responses under the tweet are filled with skepticism. Two previous DCEU directors have claimed that the movie they wanted to make was nearly unrecognizable to the one that was released, because of how the films were edited when taken out of their control. Many people who saw Gunn's tweet in such strong support of Warner Bros. felt that his comments were throwing his fellow directors under the bus, or that it was some kind of attempt at bragging.

Zack Snyder, original director of 2017's Justice League, suffered a personal tragedy during the making of his movie and had to step down from his role. He has been very outspoken about his distaste for the Justice League film that was released, saying it was completely removed from his vision, and due to the public response, there will be an official Snyder Cut of the film coming to HBO Max this year.

Similarly, Suicide Squad director David Ayer has been very vocal on social media about the studio ruining his vision as well. Though no Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad is planned for release right now, the director has said that he would love to do one and that he would find it a cathartic experience. With enough fan support, it's certainly a possibility.

Whether Warner Bros. has changed their ways forever, or they just had more confidence in Gunn than the other directors, it's good that the DCEU will finally see a director's vision fully realized. The universe hasn't been the biggest success critically as of yet, and maybe this is the necessary change that can fix that.

The Suicide Squad is slated for release August 4, 2021.
