James Gunn, the new co-CEO of the DC Extended Universe under Warner Bros. Discovery’s DC Studios, has come forward to assure fans that the team is aware of and receptive to fans’ expectations, including those who want to see the David Ayer cut of Suicide Squad.

After a merger that created the new Warner Bros. Discovery, a search for an exec to oversee the DCEU began, which recently ended with Gunn confirmed to run the newly created DC Film Division alongside Peter Safran. The announcement was met with widespread approval, with fans buzzing about the potential with Gunn and Safran at the helm.

In a thread on Twitter, Gunn addressed the outpouring of fan interest in many potential DCEU projects, from restored TV projects to requests to adapt DC comic storylines that would be too much for the DCEU. “Opened up Twitter at the end of a long, creative weekend to see the many tweets to #SaveLegendsofTomorrow and #ReleaseTheAyerCut and fan support for other DC projects over the years," Gunn wrote. "The majority of these requests were enthusiastic and respectful. As the new (and first ever) CEOs of DC Studios, Peter and I think it’s important we acknowledge you, the fans, and let you know we hear your different desires for the pathways forward for DC.”

Gunn took up what was reportedly a job no one wanted as Warner Bros.' DCEU leader alongside Safran. He went on to say that “Although our ability to interact on Twitter has been lessened due to the workload of our new positions, we are listening and open to everything as we embark on this journey and will continue to do so for the next few years.” Fan input will likely be a major factor in mapping out the DCEU going forward, helping to fine-tune the production to meet up with the insane popularity of the MCU in the most efficient manner.

Gunn also addresses the team’s immediate focus, noting that the first projects wouldn’t be revivals of already done or canceled works. “All our initial focus is on the story going forward, hammering out the new DCU, and telling the Biggest Story Ever Told across multiple films, television shows and animated projects," Gunn wrote. "We invite all of the DC fandoms from across the multiverse — and everyone else as well — into this new universe. We can’t wait to reveal more.” The commitment to new projects and mapping out the DCEU is a great sign, as the team has access to a large roster of amazing stars, including many DCEU actors that have won Academy Awards.

While the initial outlook on this news is positive, there is a lot of work waiting ahead for Gunn and Safran. Many fans have become tired of the DCEU and comic book films in general, with Gunn himself admitting to a decline and putting forth a theory on why movies keep getting worse. How quickly and to what degree the new leaders will be able to boost the DCEU’s popularity remains to be seen.
