It isn't often that a famous filmmaker has a genuine epiphany while making what some might consider little more than a side project. But it seems that James Gunn's work on the John Cena-starring HBO Max series Peacemaker has shown him the light that is television. It's impressed him so much that he might even want to do more TV shows after his current projects are finished.

With a number of high-profile productions currently occupying his time, Gunn has apparently been particularly impressed with the overall experience of the very much uncensored Peacemaker. Whether it's the format or another aspect of the shoot, there's clearly something special about making a TV show that the veteran director found especially endearing. However, this might be slightly less surprising given how Peacemaker wasn't even originally part of the plan, with Gunn himself essentially being given the reins to pick the project himself. So maybe he already had an inkling of how much fun he would have.

"I love doing Peacemaker," Gunn said in an interview with Den of Geek discussing his upcoming film The Suicide Squad. "I could see just making TV shows after [Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3]. It's a possibility." Just that one statement shows how busy he must be, with two movies and a show on his hands. Maybe that's one reason why he enjoys the idea of a series. Rather than being pulled between several different productions, a TV show is more cohesive and spread out, letting him remain focused on one idea while also not requiring him to squeeze a whole coherent story into 2 hours of footage. There are likely more than a few reasons the cast of Peacemaker seems to be having as much fun as Gunn himself.

Peacemaker is an interesting character. A self-described pacifist, he's willing to use excessive force to maintain that ideal. His rather confused outlook on life seems to come from some heavy trauma, resulting in a rather unhinged character whom many describe as a less popular version of Deadpool. Interestingly, some also compare him to Watchmen character The Comedian, which makes sense considering Alan Moore himself designed The Comedian to be based on Peacemaker, due to not being able to include the latter in his graphic novel. Details about the series itself have been kept closely under wraps, so speculation based on the character's comic book version is pretty much all there is to go on.

Peacemaker isn't even out yet, and nobody really knows what it's about, but the idea of Gunn creating more TV shows in the future is an intriguing one. Shows tend to allow for more character development and more naturally flowing storytelling, which are two elements of his movies that stand out. So maybe it'll be fun.

Of course, he still has to complete his current projects, and that will definitely take a while. To be fair, The Suicide Squad is apparently already finished far ahead of its release date, but there's always bound to be something else. Plus, everyone is still excited about the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie. So if TV is in Gunn's future, looks like everyone will have to be patient, at least for now.

Peacemaker is scheduled to premiere on HBO Max in January 2022.
