Acclaimed director James Gunn, who has worked on blockbuster franchises such as Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, believes that there is much potential for a crossover between Marvel and DC. But how exactly would that work? Well, Gunn has an idea, and it's actually a pretty solid one.

In a recent statement to Jake's Takes, Gunn said he would love to realize a crossover film with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn and Groot. Both characters are fan favorites in their respective realms and putting them together in a standalone feature would surely get people talking.

Gunn added that he was so into the idea that he even pitched it to the heads of both Marvel and DC. The impression he got from them was that they were both open to the possibilities, but he was ultimately unsure whether the two would actually make something like that happen. Still, Gunn believes that a film with both Marvel and DC characters would be embraced by fans. Not only would it be a potential cash cow, but it would also be very fun to make.

James Gunn

This isn't the first time Gun has put forth this suggestion. In the past, Gunn has made several tweets regarding his dream Marvel and DC crossover involving CGI characters from his films. He said he'd love to see Rocket, King Shark, Groot, and Weasel share the big screen. However, given his love and appreciation for Harley Quinn and what Margot Robbie has brought to the character, he seems to have expanded on his initial ideas and included her in them.

If a Marvel and DC crossover were ever to happen, Gunn would be the perfect director for the film. His unique point of view and boundary-pushing humor is exactly what a Harley Quinn and Groot film would need to succeed, and many fans seem to agree. While we may not be able to see his mind-blowing idea come to life anytime soon, we can still catch his upcoming works for Marvel Studios and DC (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad, respectively) in the near future.

A Marvel and DC crossover is highly unlikely to happen, given that both companies are lifelong adversaries. Their famed rivalry has stood the test of time and that probably won't change anytime soon, even if many comic book fans love both of them. Of course, fans can always dream, and Gunn is clearly among those dreamers.

The Suicide Squad is scheduled for a theatrical and HBO Max release on August 6th, 2021.
