James Gunn seems to be flying high these days. Between the release of The Suicide Squad late last year and the premiere of Peacemaker on HBO Max, it's almost easy to forget that he's got tons of other projects still up there in the pipeline. Luckily, he hasn't forgotten, and he's got plenty to say about what fans can expect when he jumps the border from DC back to Marvel for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Peacemaker just premiered its first 3 episodes, and viewers are already raving about the show. So while the new John Cena-led festival of violence is fresh in everybody's mind, director Gunn is ready to keep people looking forward to some of his other big upcoming benchmarks. From the 3rd movie in an unexpected fan darling Guardians of the Galaxy franchise to a holiday special that would make Star Wars jealous, there's plenty to get excited about.

In an interview with Collider about the debut of Peacemaker, Gunn got the chance to go into some detail about his upcoming sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and one of the new faces viewers will get to enjoy this time around. One new cast member in particular is British-Nigerian actor Chukwudi Iwuji, who looks like he'll be another of Gunn's favorite people to use in his projects. "It's going great," Gunn said. "Chukwudi, who plays Murn in Peacemaker, is one of the main characters in the movie and people are freaking out over how good this guy is. Literally freaking out. I think that I'm really happy."

Gunn went on to give a hint to audiences about the upcoming movie. "It's different than what people are going to expect," he continued. "It's a hard road, but I'm really happy with it so far." It looks like that isn't the only thing he has to be happy about, as the conversation eventually shifted over to the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which was announced over a year ago. Naturally, many are curious about the progress of this particularly quirky and ambitious project. Unfortunately, it turns out they haven't even started shooting yet. But that doesn't mean fans should get worried just yet.

"It's still upcoming in the shoot," Gunn explained. "We were supposed to shoot one day in LA, and there's too much Omicron around, so we couldn't do it. We're going to have to fit it in. I haven't started yet. I'm excited to. It's fun." It's kind of sad that "there's too much Omicron around" is such a mundane thing to say now when it sounds so futuristic and cool out of context. But at least it helps explain the delay for the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

Audiences shouldn't worry, though. Gunn is one director who's been pretty reliable in recent years, and he's shown time and time again that his projects are well worth the wait. So a little longer shouldn't be a problem. Plus, the idea that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be different from what some are expecting is definitely something to get excited about, especially from the guy who made Sylvester Stallone into a big mumbly shark.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently set to release in theaters on May 5th, 2023.
