James Gunn is one busy guy, yet he’s for all the work he does, the man is within a tweet’s reach for almost anyone, as he constantly answers questions from fans and journalists concerning his latest projects. Considering that, it’s really no wonder Gunn confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to start filming at some point this year.

Last week, Gunn shared the second trailer for his upcoming The Suicide Squad, a new take on many of the same characters that starred in David Ayer’s 2016 film, though these early previews got many fans excited about how he can bring some of the charm and humor that made Guardians of the Galaxy such a hit over to DC's world. As for his work with Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is slated for a 2023 release that leaves plenty of time for the Guardians to finish shooting their scenes in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Gunn’s most recent Guardians of the Galaxy update came after one fan casually asked him if he was working on John Cena’s Peacemaker, the upcoming HBO series created and written by Gunn, who, after confirming his involvement, proceeded to tell another fan that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is definitely beginning its filming process in 2021. Though no specific dates were mentioned, it’s likely that this will be towards the end of the year, as Gunn is tied to Peacemaker at least until this summer.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has many setups that fans may be looking forward to, most notably the potential introduction of Adam Warlock as the Guardians’ newest and most powerful foe so far before Gunn finally waves goodbye to the franchise. With filming bound to start in 2021, it won’t take long until more casting news and possible cameos start to surface, with maybe even Chris Hemsworth paying Chris Pratt a visit to return the favor.

For now, Gunn is booked to direct at least a few episodes of Peacemaker, which, alongside the more promising The Suicide Squad, could end up boosting his status in the DC Extended Universe and thus his working relationship with the WarnerMedia Group. Gunn was temporarily fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 by Disney back in 2018 over a series of controversial old tweets before being reinstated in his role a few months later, so it’s really no surprise to get this kind of info straight from his Twitter account.

With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being placed at the tail end of the MCU’s time-twisting Phase Four pipeline, there will be plenty of time for Gunn and the rest of the production team to put together the film's Awesome Mix Vol. 3 to boost Marvel’s fantastic taste in music. So, buckle up for another adventure with the galaxy’s funniest bounty hunters.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2023.
